I assume many here have already upgraded, the prices seem very reasonable.

So anyone upgraded yet and had a problem, anything that you can gives a heads up with?

I did the upgrade assessment and it found a few issues, my Microsoft One-care apparently will not work, nor will my Right hemisphere apps.

    Anyone notice any speed improvements?

      Hi Solo,

Just finished installing on HP Pavillion DV7 that previously ran Vista 64bit. There's a definite speed improvement and there was no issues with the install. The migration seems to have flawless so far, but as the laptop is only 1 month old, i hadn't many files or programs installed that would have caused me to be concerned.

My very early opinion on the look and feel compared with Vista is positive so far. Now to overload with needless rubbish! 😲

But if it fails to live up to expectations i'll revert back to XP 64bit

How does it manage resources? Compare it with XP, please. Because I never used Vista πŸ’š (thanks God for that).

comparable with XP SP3 in terms of startup/shutdown times - Vista was sluggish

beats XP and Vista in transferring large file

beats XP and Vista in opening larger docs like pdfs, xls etc

Vista UAC is more customisable and not as irritating

So far the battery life is alot better with 7 but its early days

          Does this help?

Yes it does help! It looks more efficient. On the other does it use a lot of cpu/ram? I truly don't want to offer serious parts of my pc to some fancy OS, just because it looks nice and opens file quickly πŸ˜† Since Win7 was launched I heard just good things about, but some things reveal in time...

compared with XP it uses alot of RAM, but XP could in theory operate on just 64mb of RAM. It's use of memory and processing compared with Vista is a big change.

I like to use Virtual Desktops, and found under Vista this led to lots of slowdowns. But now there's a definite improvement.

I currently have iTunes streaming music on one desktop, SU7 on another, transferring 80GB of music with Teracopy on another and Vuze running on the last. There's a slight change in speed but still working away in SU7 and happy as a pig in sh*t

Great news, I heard a story about windows 7 being installed on a Macbook pro and it multi-tasked and bench-marked faster than Snow leopard, even though the machine was spec'd and optimised for Snow leopard windows 7 was smoother and faster.
Great news, kinda like the win 95 days then.

                Now I've started something..

i got an upgrade code with my new computer, i realise now i should have done it before installing all my software, but if i do the upgrade do i lose all my software/settings?

feel like such a fool for not doing it earlier.

A mate of mine has been testing Windows 7 for some time.

His view is that Windows 7 is in reality nothing more than Vista SP 3 and that Microsoft are taking the p*** by charging for it as a new OS.

He also says that the consensus amongst many testers is that while initial install produces a much better performance, after configuring the options and adding anti-virus and other essential features, and applications, the difference in performance with Vista is actually quite negligible.

Life's a reach, and then you gybe.

To me, the best thing about Win7 is its support for legacy software, and older peripheral hardware.

I have windows 7 ultimate running on my mac and while it does initially seem more stable than vista.....I cant help but think its pretty much the same.

They need to start fresh and reinvent.

                              Day 1
Not going too badly so far. Only minor annoyance during installation is that i had to start clean as i was running vista ultimate, and for whatever reason you cant 'upgrade' to a 'lower' version of windows 7. Really needed a clean install, though, so might as well get it out the way now.

install itself was very easy, just click and leave it whirring away for an hour or so and hey presto.

                              Now to reinstall everything.

Win7 arrived here yesterday, but there is still no pricing info. They did not bring the Ultimate version, so Win 7 Professional 64-bits is the highest I'll be able to get when I decide to take the plunge. When I tried to install the RC1 weeks ago it kept nagging about missing drivers for my LG optical unit (only two months old), so I'm not convinced yet.

BTW: See Linus Torvalds giving a thumb up to Windows 7:

Of course, Linus was just joking.

Anyway, now for some fun at the expense of Apple's desperation...
