Putting Logos amd Lettering onto models
-
I use sketch up to build models that I make into 2D images and use in my webcomic. It has revolutionized the look and I am thrilled. It also saves drawing the same objects over and over. Anyway I need to put logos and Roundels onto round and angled surfaces. I was wondering if anyone could lead me to a tutorial that would help me out with this. Thanks

Hello, Fatoldbaldguy! ( how familiar, except for the "fat" part )
I think it has something to do with "projecting" and " wrapping" textures - check out http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=21762.
I am sure that pretty soon you will get more useful explanations, but hey... -
You can see I added the Healer emblem to this in photoshop. If you look close it is apparent I didn't get the perspective quite right. I want to apply the emblems directly to the model. I also have some other models with curved and angled surfaces that would benefit from permanently applied logos. -
Hi Fatoldbaldguy,
You can either import an image file, explode it, then project it onto the surface, or you can actually print the design onto your model in real geometry. For this you need to make a cookie cutter. The process ought to be clear in the attached skp file. Just click through the scene tabs. The second option is probably better for stuff like lettering or logos which tend not to be rectangular, because in the case of image projection you need to draw a boundary on the surface to stop the image tiling over the entire surface. This in turn means that you'd need to make sure that the background of the image (in your example, the blue) exactly matched the rest of the model. It never would...because image colours always light differently from applied colours from the palette, even if they have identical RGB values.

I wrote a script for this kind of stuff. Its not perfect, but it does begin to help a lot. Its called shape bender. You can download it here:

It is at the bottom of the first post. Please read the first post and watch the video. That will help explain how to use the script. And if you have questions with it, feel free to ask them in that same thread where I'll be sure to see them. I hope it helps,
Chris

yeah, shape bender is definitely cool.. just used it this afternoon [on the lettering] and it worked out very well ..
