will opening and closing get rid of the group/component rendering bug in vray?

my scene has heavily nested components and groups so ı cant go and explode all the components. would some thing like making the scene one large component and re aplying it from the component manager do the trick as well?

i have been trying out vray for 3 months now and i still cant get the hang of how SU relates to Vray. lights also wont render some times if they are in components withc makes me very sad. and glass and mirror materials act all funny depending on lots of small things like where i aplied my glass material to and what is touching the component. im slowly getting there and i have learned lots of tips and tricks but i had no idea it would be so hard and kind of intuitive for a noob like me

comments and help would be greatly apreshiated

Old Version of V-Ray for Sketchup:
For disappearing groups you need to explode and regroup.
Lights can not be inside groups/components.

      New version of V-Ray (SR1.5 - 1.05.30):
Close the model and open it again. (No need to restart SU, just open a new model and then reopen the model you where working on.)

Lights can be placed inside groups/components. I've not experienced any lights not rendering. (Maybe your problem is related to disappearing groups bug.)

NEVER apply material to the outside of a group or component. One reason is that it'll take an insane amount of time to parse the scene when you do that. And it also causes any smooth/soft surface inside to render faceted. Always apply material to faces and faces only.

      Both versions:
Only groups disappear. Components only disappear as a result of being nested in a group. The disappearing group bug is due to a Sketchup bug where it doesn't report back properly what parent the group belongs to.

      Glass:
If you use glass with refraction you need to apply it to a solid geometry. The glass must have thickness. You may see some artefacts at the edge of the glass if the faces are touching another face - causing Z-fighting. Offset the glass surface with 0.5-1.0mm (that's how it is in reality anyway - slight gap.)
Ensure you got the glass material applied to both sides of the faces.

Mirror materials: what kind of problems?

Thomas, I notice that some renderers have problems with Su components. Is there a particular reason for that? Can't the SUPlug-in2Renderer, find and reduce each group/component to its basic surface before processing it? I am under the impression that DB's Su2Pov plug-in explodes components prior to sending it to Pov. If other plug-ins don't, can't a plug-in be written that does that then calls the renderers plug-in? May be a generic plug in can be written, that includes a variable at the top of a plug in that a user can edit with his renders name. Just thinking out loud.

Components - or Groups? I've only experienced problems with groups.

There is a plugin to explode all groups/components - bomb. But it can take ages on some models or even crash. Even selecting a big model and using the native SU explode can take time. I would therefore avoid that method. (And I'm also very caution about such a destructive method.)

For the disappearing groups - in V-Ray it's because SU returns the wrong definition. That is possible to work around that. I've posted such a solution on the forum and I've also informed ASGVis. I'm hoping the workaround is included in the next version.

Never used Vray myself, and refered to "components" because of Motley's post, and others I read elsewhere. Thanks for the info.

I find that people often mix "components" and "group" loosely when they mention them. I've get to hear any confirmation that it's components as well that's affected.

the problem was a group and not a component but it was inside many components and groups so kid of hard to tell. i managed to get the group to render finaly after many explosions.

to apply glass vray material to model i sellect every thıng that is glass, right click on the white face and apply, then on the purple face and apply right?

Are you using the original VfSU? Where you have to create separate V-Ray material and apply then - or explicitly create linked materials?
(In the newest version all materials are automatically linked)

Bugs and procedures depends on what version you have.

Go to the V-Ray Option Window - expand the About section - what version number does it say there?
