[Plugin] Perpendicular Face Tools (UPDATED 26-03-09)
-
nice job! very useful plugin. thank you.

Hi Chris, another idea....
Have you considered adding components and groups to this tool? as with your custom face tool, another option that I think people would find 'components perpendicular; tool handy....
Maybe another tool though as this is a 'perpendicular face' tool after all.Cheers,
-
chris,
i have downloaded the latest version posted above and am having a number of problems:
- on the text it says 1.1 not 1.2. could you have posted the wrong script?
- the custom shape does not explode after it is placed;
- all the faces get oriented parallel to the red axis;
- control does not work as described;
- the up arrow does not work as described.
i am on mac. could there be some incompatibility?
-
Hmm, interesting. I know there were problems. Do you have sketchy physics installed? I know Chris implemented some things in SketchyPhysics that clash with the arrow keys. I'm not sure if ever fixed it. Perhaps try removing sketchyphysics if you have it.
If not, there was also a Mac issue, but I fixed that early on I think. But perhaps the wrong version is posted. I'll try to look into today for you.

no sketchyphysics installed. the odd thing is that all your other scripts work for me.
-
I have a feeling that I never got around to updating this script again after I found out that Macs and PC arrow keys are registered differently. I'll need to look at it again and figure out how to change it. I thought I had already, but it must be another script. Perhaps I remembering that I did it on shapebender, but never got around to fixing this one correctly.
Sorry Edson, I'll try to get it working.
Also, I don't think that I had planned on exploding the face once it gets put on the end of the line. If I explode it in the script, then if there is geometry in the way, it could clash. So I leave it up to the user to explode on their own, once they have verified that the shape does not intersect with other geometry.
And I checked the version number. It is the right script, I just forgot to update that line in the code...sorry!
And as for th3e red axis, there is a good chance that the up arrow keys are messing things up before the script aligns the face. I am really anxious to start coding again, I just need to get in and do it. So give me a few days and I'll see if I can bust out a new version of this.

take your time, chris. no hurry. we have a lot to thank you for already.

7.1 bug perhaps? Entering in a fractional value for face size for the circular tool (e.g. 6 3/4") in the VCB results in the circle only coming out to 6" radius.
And I use this thing all the time... help me out!
-
Is this new to 7.1? Or was it like this before? It might just be me not coding it correctly. Try using a decmial instead of fraction for now. I think that should work. I'll look into when I get a a chance.
And if it is a 7.1 thing, that is very interesting. I know that CadFather found some issue with units. And units and decimals and fractions are all connected.

Hi there,
Just wanted to drop in to say thank you to Chris.
This is a wonderful tool.
I use it to position mesh lights perpendicular to the camera line (for rendering).The video in the first post is great. I especially like the sound of your wife doing the dishes while you recorded it.

I found a bug. Nothing happened when I use "perpendicular circle" tool to place a circle whose radius is smaller enough, for example 10mm. Because of nothing happened, I did it many times, then it crash. Is there any way to fix this??
-
amazing! thanks!
-
Another great tool, Thanks Chris,...keep'em coming.
-
Thanks again for all the great comments. Devloping these scripts is a lot of fun, but it is sure helpful when there is also people letting you know they appreciate the work and time that has been put into these scripts - THANKS!
Chris

BIG Thanx...
-
Chris, does it only works with FACES?? Why not with 3d objects too?
I then tried to create SINGLE faces, and make them into a component, so I would place them with your plugin and then replace ONE component with a more complex 3D object... but it also didnt accept using the component... the face must be exploded
Cant you change that?
-
I don't have time right now to fix it how you would like, but as a work around, you could also install my components to faces plugin. That will apply your component to all selected faces, which would probably do what your looking for, for now.

Thanks for the suggestion... in fact, I already had your two plugins installed, I guess I just hadnt used them yet!
-
Hi Chris,
I installed v1.2 and the script doesn't show up anywhere, not under the Plugins pull-down, or your separate sub-list under Plugins.
I'd appreciate your help.
Thank you. Ben

Hi Ben, sounds like it is not getting put in the correct place somehow. There should be a single file called clf_perpendicular_face_tools_loader.rb in the main plugins folder. And a folder called clf_perpendicular_face_tools that has all the other files it in (clf_perpendicular_face_tools.rb, circle_xx.png(2), square_xx.png(2), and star_xx.png(2)). So make sure everything is in the right spot and let me know if that helps. If not, we'll keep trying,
Chris
