Granny Art - Incredible amount and quality of png entourage
-
Guys, I was browsing the net today for some decent grass textures I could use to make cutouts of (transparent png / clipmap whatnot type) and suddenly ran across this incredible site maintained by Helga Stolzenwald from Iceland: http://grannyart.blogspot.com/
I was amazed by the amount and quality of the stuff she shares there totally royalty free!

There is not terms of use on my stuff that i share on this site you dont need to credit me then you share or sell this stuff, this is your stuff then you have take it from my site you can modify, change it on that way you like and sell it as it is or change it and sell it. I speak very bad english but I hope you understand what I are say, we must have peace and love in our life hugs Granny
Simply put; awesome work; hundreds if not thousands of png files that can be used both for PR and NPR work as well as PP, plants, different objects, people, whatnot (you may want to modify the brightness and/or saturation of some of the images to fit your needs).
From this "virtual and physical distance" I can only thank her for sharing this stuff so generously.
Here is a quick grass component I put together: three instances of the same component put together nested at 60 degrees. Note that I didn't make any tracearound in SU so casting and receiving shadows is turned off. It shouldn't cause a problem in most external renderers which recognise png transparency and if you need a B&W clipmap instead, you can easily create one yourself from the alpha map.
Also, the image inside is rather high resolution (as all the images she makes) but I didn't want to downsample it; now with SU 7 you can easily do whatever you want with it (right click > Texture > Edit texture... resize, compress etc. > Save > and it will refresh in SU instantly).
Oops; almost forgot - the component can be downloaded from the warehouse:
Oops again: with my first upload, I forgot to scale the grass correctly - now done (height is 30 cm ~ 1') so new link:

Last, but not least, I think it's really worth checking out her other stuff (CG Art) beside just rushing and downloading whatever you can, as well. It's really stunning, I can tell. -
Wow, that is a lot of content and great stuff! It will take some time to go through it all. Thanks for sharing it!!

Great Find Csaba...thanks for sharing.

Hey I even mentioned it in The Daily CatchUp! Well worth and deserved I believe!

very good find!

Wow, excellent find Gaieus and she is very generous.

Great find.
It would be a nice SCF group effort to convert the most usable stuff into Sketchup models we can use on the spot.
I for one like to volunteer to convert some of the PNG images to SU models.Maybe the SCF community could contact them and we could 'give' them these sketchup files to upload on their site?
As long as it can remain for free off course.
It would be a nice community gesture and perhaps Grannyart will like the idea to become a SU ressource as it will increase the traffic they receive.... -

I for one like to volunteer to convert some of the PNG images to SU models.I was thinking about the same thing. Eeven furter, why couldn't we use the 3D Warehouse (and create a collection for it) so that it gets even bigger spotlight than if they are simply attached to SCF (Guests cannot fownload it anyway).

Hi guys,
A bit of heads up here. I started to convert the images into 2D components as I am at a stage with a project where I need stuff like this anyway (some are Face-me while others not - as the subject dictates it).
You can find them here:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=4555dc184759247ac19773ea4151b25bNote that the image files are huge so they may tax your video card but I didn't want to "optimise" them - everyone can shrink them to their needs (open the component > Right click on the face > Texture > Edit texture image and downsample - upon saving, it will instantly update in SU).
Also there are no cutout versions (I will render them anyway so won't even bother with shadows).
Finally, they are uploaded as components and should be downloaded as such (i.e. straight into your model or save them first and import them). Here is a shot with three ivy veins I have uploaded so far (their origin/insertion point is set 5 cms/2" behind the face so can be conveniently inserted in front of a wall by snapping to the wall or its edge).

Man I was keen for the grass in the first post mate but it seems to have gone from the warehouse now!
-
There was some issue
- with the compression of the image file (I screwed up)
- with uploading components straight from inside a model (it is fixed now).
I will upload it again but actually here it is:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=81024baa007199eba30fc8ca6ca5b07cYou can see the issue (the uploader didn't make a thumbnail of it) and see the poor image quality from close, too (although true that you don't necessarily render grass from very close).
So I just didn't include it into this collection yet as I want to make it really good - as it was by the creator of the images.

Thanks mate!
Im currently working on a way to model lower poly 3d plants that will produce better result when rendered and avoid that single plane look or the problem where thin geometry tends to disappear when viewed from the side.
I'll post some results soon I hope!
-
Quick test on the idea I have considered, still needs to be perfected - a lot!
Though wow didn't think it would be so fast to create plants, wish I had done it years ago!
-
GREAT and AWESOME!, thanks a lot!
