Russian President Medvedev Shows Off Coin New World Currency

Interesting post Coen. I don't know if this means anything other than just some wishful thinking or pipedreams of some small politicians or bussinessmen, though the lack of optimism, yours and others, towards a united future is starting to get tiresom. Why can't a single political entity, United Earth or something or other, can't be considered something positive, or something that has a positive potential, in all things there are advantages and drawbacks, i think the current international scene has so many drawbacks that a reorganization wouldn't hurt. We can't stay like this forever anyway, and globalization, today, has also an uncontrollable economical element that may do with some regulation....
My mind is still open, but i prefer being optimistic on the political and social evolution of humankind. We all love Star Trek, think of social and the political messages in it, why not try to creat it? -
I would be wary of further concentration of power(money). However I do support UN and World Courts. And perhaps these organizations need more power. I know some people think otherwise.
I'd rather see nationalism weakened rather than nations. Right now the trend is for corporations to overcome and run nations and a central monetary system would be controlled by them.
We should be looking for more democratic control of power (money). How is a central system better in this regard? Also, isn't part of the "value" of money in it's trade? Isn't it better to have many strong currencies to interact with one another?

Marian,
It's a matter of checks and balances. The loss of sovereignty amongst nations and the centralization of power, money, judicial systems, police and military, etc. will tip the scales in favor of corruption and global enslavement. It may just work if people were peaceful by nature, but we've evolved into a world of waring factions and evil and corruption is abundant if not dominant in the world today.
There exists and will always exist the underpinnings of Malthusian theory amongst the leaders of mankind, which is namely that a Utopian society is impossible once over population occurs. I have always felt like population reduction has been at the core of a lot of man's woes, where generally the Have Nots are sent to die by the ones in power. How would this thinking become evident in a one world order? Would we adopt the policies of China and put a global tax on children?
Do you think a one world order will cause a cease in the need for military, since there will be no one to fight and there are no Klingons in real life, or will the militaries might be used to control and keep the people in line? To me it is a scary notion.
The world definitely needs a change in my opinion and we do need to join together and work in unison to resolve the issues that threaten to destroy the planet, but if relinquish our individual sovereignty and take the power away from the people and put into the hands of a few, we would only be heading towards an eventual downfall and enslavement. After all, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

A single political entity = communism and an end to democrcracy.

Things aren't that simple, Linea. Communism as it was ment to be, imagined by Marx and Engels never existed, it was perveted by the one country in which communism was not ment to occur, Russia.
Its ideals were not bad or evil just it's implementation was. Pure communism is also an utopic dream while i don't see a single Earth an utopic dream.
A world government doesn't necesarrily mean one ideology, or the dissapearance of all states.
I'm aware of all the arguments against it, but why not try some positive thought, instead of just saying it's bad, what can it be done to make it good?
I don't believe that it's a bad idea all round and it should never happen. From my stand point i see it as an inevitable occurance, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, and we should do our best to make it as democratic and human friendly as possible. So criticism and scepticism are not unwelcomed, as they are necessary for improvements and evolution, but at the moment they overwhelm any optimistic view.
I see all the possibilities for a single global political entity to go badly wrong, but i also see all the possibilities for doing things otherwise impossible. -
There isn't and there won't be an organization, a government, an institution that will make everyone safe, happy and in good shape. It is impossible.
All those organizations are meant to serve, but in the end they will always support those with more power and more money. It is the way We think. It is a competitive World, when instead of supporting your colleague, sharing your knowledge with him, you would rather see him as a competitor, someone who poses a threat to your own 'success'.If we want to change the World we have to start from our own garden. No global currency, no global government will change our thinking. Whole current economy is based on killing any competition and leads us to the only one car manufacturer, the only one TV station, the only one military force, the one CAD software.
Marian, there is a hope, but I wouldn't invest it in an institution.

I don't really have anymore things to say about this.
I have to agree with Coen on some things but not totally...
The problem we have anyway is like this; The world is not right. Fix it!..uhmmm HOW?! -
Its way too early to be making judgement about a global currency that is not even on the horizon. This is clearly a case of Russia posturing against perceived weakening of US hegemony. I feel it is way too early to give up the Dollar. It still has the most liquidity.

This is really interesting. You're exactly right. For example: Ireland voted out the new EU treaty, so what do we do? Just get them to vote again! That's like I used to be as a kid: Toss the coin, and if I don't like the answer, toss again.
The reason for me posting is just to make the point that the Bible said this would happen, and the outcome isn't great. It's probably the most well known, feared, and misunderstood verses in the Bible, but it's simply talking about the result of a single currency (namely complete power to the ones who control it):
Rev 13:16 "He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name."
The likely outcome is that a global single currency will be introduced soon combined with some sort of ID card, or even a barcode. Identity cards are being trialed in the UK as we speak.

The problem I have with "single world" anything is that it has nothing at all to do with the people or the world, or making the world a better place. There is no altruistic reason for this, no reason to stop war, no halt to genocide, no cessation of doing all the stupid things humanity has done for a thousand years. If they wanted to create such a world, why not make it for free education? Free health care? Jobs for all? Stop the production of arms and ammunition worldwide? I figure this is every bit as reasonable as a centralized world government.
The reality is:
It's about money.
It's about business.
It's about greed.
It puts all the power and money in the hands of a few and makes it easier for businesses and commercial entities to access and control the flow of goods and resources around the world. Unless a "New World Order" includes a system to level the playing field for all peoples, it serves no purpose other than the aforementioned. Even if it did, it would never work; if a system of government like that actually worked, we would have started using it a long time ago.
