i think theres a plugin for this, it may be commericial

First thing you'll have to do is connect the gaps in your contour lines so they're continuous. Then you can select all of your continuous contour lines and use the "From Contours" tool in the Sandbox toolbar. That will connect them all in a nice smooth fashion.

hey, i managed to get it too work finally .... yes i had to close the gaps in the lines ...
although i tip i found using adobe illustrator to simplify the contour lines then import them worked well

how do you import the illustrator lines?

my workflow :
Import cad lines to adobe illustrator ...
then select all, object/ paths/ simplify ... play with settings
Export to dxf/dwg from adobe illustrator
open the new cad file in autocad ... check the scale as it will probably open up in different units, or if you know a particular dimension then you can just scale them once inside sketchup with the tape measure tool
