I'm having trouble getting this boat hull for a paddle steamer that I'm building to subdivide nicely (it looks ok in sketchup but when rendered you can really notice the problems with it). Can anyone help me? It is to exact dimensions so I don't really want to change the overall shape too much.

Well, it may be a little extreme (I used two iterations with SDS and it looks that one would've been fairly enough) but it's smoothnow for sure.

thanks gaieus, yes it is smooth now. It isn't quiet clean though. I was wondering how to achieve a more clean subdivide (what kinds of edits I need to make to the geometry to give I nice clean subdivide with no little glitches). In some sections of the hull when subdivided result in small, triangular bumps and concaves along the hull.

I havent had a very thorough look, but at the bow/stern there was some internal geometry, this will mess up SDS.There was also something odd going on at the other end, i think it's something to do with the bow/stern being so thin.

Other than that just another iteration of SDS should be enough to completely smooth out the hull.

Maybe if you crease all the lines around the bulging part only and sds the bulge, it gives some more acceptable results (with 1 iteration now)

Take a look at this one. I made a few minor changes to the geometry and got rid of the outright glitches...

Edit: After I uploaded this, I took the top off to see what it would look like without being enclosed. This exposed another accidental surface on the inside of the hull that needs to be removed.

Real life is just another website, albeit a rather boring one.

See this Tutorial on modelling Boat Hulls by another method (using SoapSkinBubble):
                  http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=9652.
                  See the attached *.skp also.
                  .........
I would also recommend using Fredo's Bezier Spline Script to draw the curves - an excellent tool.
Possibly using it in F-Spline mode for your particular Task - as you can use your existing Hull design to snap to.
                  ..........
Concentrate on getting nice smooth curves for the top and bottom of the Hull - this will give a better overall result.
You have the position of the ribs already so you can join them up with the BezierSpline Tool.
                  ...........
See attached - a very quick go just showing a hull half.
                  ...........
I hope this helps and gives you some ideas
                  Regards

thanks so much guys. I'm making it for my granddad and hoping to render it or get it 3d printed.

I will take a look at all the models. I thought I did it cleanly, but now I can see that I made quiet a few mistakes!
