Indigo Going Commercial
-
Dunno, Pete. While Modo certainly is a good modeling app, currently I am not that hot about the quality of the renders it produces. Sure, it's just the ticket for product shots, but arch viz? That's where it falls short, for the time being.
Oh well, I'll likely go with Modo anyway, and make do.
I am curious to see where Indigo heads, though.
-
i don't see how you could see a problem with Modo's rendering? it looks world class to me, even better than indigo, just has a very steep learning curve IMO. take a look at modo's gallery compared to indigo's. besides if the makers of indigo think i'll pay for their renderer then use someone elses exporter, their crazy! i would advise Whaat and the rest of the exporter developers to seise and desist development imediatly, then we'd see how fast indigo gets flushed down the toilet. i don't think its a bad idea for indigo to go commercial, i do however think it shows weasel shit practices that they think they can sell us a product based on the strengths of people who developed the framework of that program for free, and whom have not been involved OR informed (according to Whaat) of such commercial plans.
that's not a company that i want to be involved with, who knows whats next? maybe you buy indigo then Whaat decides not to continue with skindigo, you just payed for a brick. Or maybe you pay $500 for indigo and the writter of the exporter you use decides hey, if indigo's worth $500, then my exporter should be worth $500, what do you do then?
Way too unpredictable to me.

By looking carefully.

Look closer.

This most certainly is a good point.

If Indigo goes commercial it is logical that the plugins would go commercial as well.
How can you expect Whaat doing it for free when he knows he's making someone else richer but not earning anything himself?Off course I would have preferred Indigo and the plugins to remain free ....simply because getting things for free is fun
-
lol. True. I must admit I too liked Indigo's being free. Nonetheless, their move is an interesting one, as it means they got to have something they haven't shown us yet. Or at least I hope so, for their sake.
-
My guess is that the exporters will remain free, but the developers will be paid a percentage from each license sold.
xrok, last i heard ben and nick were talking to the exporter developers about indigo going commercial. Hardly "weasel shit practices."

Nick and ben are not stupid, im sure theyve thought pretty hard about how theyre going to work it with regards to the exporters.

I would like to hear from Whaat on this. what's your take on this; did you know it was coming; have they contacted you on your exporter; if not would you have wasted so much time and effort if you'd have known it was going commercial?
In all honesty, I did not know that Indigo would go commercial. As for me, I'm still on the team and I hope to stay on the team. Things are quite chaotic right now but I am sure that in time, things will get sorted out and the users will be getting a higher quality product with much better documentation and customer support.
Cheers,
Whaathmm, hmm!

@bigfan we are talking with exporter writers at the moment (we have a very interesting google group) to work out how to get everyone paid...
That was on the 24th as well, so it would seem the exporter developers have been informed and are being involved.
-
I don't remember the exact day I found out (I could check the forums), but it would have been the same day as the beta testing group. So really...I had no special advanced notice.

Indigo: 595€ = $774
VRay for SketchUp: $720

If they introduce a couple of improvements - especially speed wise, as Indigo's even slower than Maxwell - while retaining the ease of use we have Whaat to thank for, then Indigo will be well worth it's price. Keep in mind, too, there's an Indigo exporter for Blender. Handy for those of us who need to render heavy scenes every now and then. Fry, Maxwell and Vray (not the SU one) don't have Blender plugs - one needs to buy Max, Maya ...
Huge plus for Indigo, IMO.
-
i think most people that use blender do so because its free not because its user friendly. so i can't imagine them getting a free modeller that has free options for rendering, then pay $500 for a renderer???? besides, as long as kerkythea exists who would buy indigo (even though i prefer it)? Now maybe if someone got realistic and solid indigo for $100 while with $25 of that going to the exporter writer, they might get somewhere. otherwise i think their shooting themselves in the head (never mind the foot). its unrealistic to go from free to $500 with no points in between, considering the alternatives out there???????

My point was that if you'd want to render high poly models with either Fry or Maxwell, you'd also have to shell out for an expensive modeling app - which puts quite a bit of extra strain on the old budget. Indigo does not have this handicap.

http://vray.us/vray_for_sketchup.shtmlVray for SU is quite buggy and limited compared to the C4D and MAX version, but it definitely outrules an unbiased render engine.
For a render engine that was free once, Indigo now is very expensive

Yeah, it's a pretty good app. They should make it work outside of SU, though. And obviously get rid of the bugs. (Imagine, for a moment, that car manufacturers had the same, err, work ethos as software devs. )

True. Yet no-one's stopping you from continueing to use the latest free version - which, all in all, is pretty good. Also, it's too early to judge whether Indigo's too expensive or not.
Time they produced a feature list.

Guess who got a license?
-
So can you tell us what is the difference between commercial and free one.
-
I can't just yet - can't get the license thingy to work. Will be sorted.
From what I read on the beta forum it's considerably faster than the previous version, though. Someone even said he'd noticed a 23 % speed increase.
Can't wait for the license and the updated exporter. Whaat, get to it! Chop, chop!
-
So you bought it without knowing what you will get?
