Camera Angles
-
I'm quite new to Sketchup (about 2 months) and I'm finding it difficult to get a good camera angle for my interior shots. Perhaps I'm not doing it properly. I choose either 2 point perspective or 1 point depending on the view that I want and position the camera, change EL and FV. In small spaces, I can't seem to get the right angle - I'm either too close or too far away. I'm working with Podium also (free version for now) and find that my views can look a little distorted. I've used Sections and Hide to try to get the best angle but when using Sections I get a white render. Perhaps I should post this also in the Podium forum. Here is a sample of a project I'm working on; wips, so things will change. I managed a good view for the WC, but I just can't seem to get the right view for the shower room, nor a good wide view of the WC.

You can use the camera placement tool to help make sure you have the camera placed as close to the wall as possible. That's the icon that looks like a little man. You can place it with a single click and it will put it about the height of a person above where you click. Or you can click and drag to place it and it will place it where you first click and point it towards where you want to look. It does not add extra hieght when you place it like that. That tool is useful for getting your view to be from exactly where you want.
Once the camera is placed, use the eyeball tools to look aorund and orient the view exactly right.
Then use the field of view tool to change the FOV to help see more or less of the room.
Now with all that being said, you might have your work cut out for you if the room is akwardly narrow and long or something. The renders look great!

Thanks for your advice Chris. The process you outlined works well, and I have managed to get some better shots but it is still a challenge. I've been hiding elements to make things better too. Does the little guy always face north? I can't seem to change his orientation - he appears too quickly! Also, is there a keyboard shortcut for using the eyes - my Mac mouse sometimes sticks and I can't scroll backwards and zoom tends to loose the view, so then I have to start all over again. Pain!

Hi Sablon, hi folks.
As soon as you have a decent view, create a scene. Then, whenever you bocome lost or disoriented or zoomed to far or too close, simply click on the scene tab to get back to the view that you want. Refine the view little by little, updating the scene as you go.
Just ideas.

Hi Jean
Thanks for the scene tip. I haven't used scenes yet, but it sounds like now is a good time to start. I found some advice over on the Podium forum too regarding sections, and I've just downloaded the zorro ruby, so hopefully that will sort out the sections issue. Thanks all.
