    hi,
I'm planning on buying a new laptop, but I haven't been following the technical evolution for the last year or so.
So before going shopping, I will have to update my knowledge about things like ram, disk space and video cards.
What I need is a laptop to do mostly sketchup and autocad work for a living, so I need something fast, reliable and with a good price-quality ratio.
Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!

For sketchup you'll need a machine with a relatively quick processor (2 Ghz+, preferably closer to the 2.5ghz mark) and a separate video card.

More generally you'll probably want a dual core machine, although it doesnt provide any advantage with SU they are generally a lot nicer to work with.

Ram: 3-4 GB is pretty much standard.

hard drive: something around the 250GB mark is pretty reasonable. If that isnt enough it is generally a lot cheaper to buy a large external hard drive than upgrade the internal hard drive.
