being in the arena when it was full must have been amazing... unless you were in the very middle of the Colosseum being chased by a tiger!

Actually, guys, the arenaof an amphitheatre is that middle partwhere people were being chased by those tigers...

thks for all your comments! its good to know someone likes what i'm doing!

the file now has 47.8 MB and will continiue to grow, it still lacks big areas like betwen the colosseum and the forum, and some buildings need some extra detail

I try not to give it too much detail because it´s suposed to be an urban model to understand the relations betwen all the buildings and the global look of the center of Rome.

But it still looks dead like lots of cardboard or clay buildings! i guess i need some good texturing, the geometry is there but the textures no, so im out on the hunt for classical textures.

Ron gave a great site: http://www.theinspirationgallery.com/

on the Architecture Borders section has some examples of what i'm looking for.

Lewis, happy to see you here! yes Matthew has contacted me, he has some great models too, maybe I can exchange some knowledge over ancient Rome with him.
About the Trajan Forum i have talked to James E. Packer who wrote the book The Forum Of Trajan, and aparently it is just the way you made it 😄

Here are some more pics of some few building interiors:
all of the basilicas have the interior made, this one is still far from complete
this one still need some realy big extra-detailing
here is the textured look i´m trying to get

James E. Packer, version of the Forum of Trajan is absolutely fantastic!
Because he only modeled this forum he was able to give it some fantastic detail, that i can't hope to achieve!

one of te remarks he made was the columns, mine are very simple, but when you have almost 1000 columns in the model, they become a big weight factor.
once again they need some texturing.
and yes if you guessed the stripes on the columns are the corrogate rust texture from Sketchup, with a diferent color lol
          James E. Packer model
same render view of James E. Packer, but with my model

Incredible work! Really outstanding detail and the city/street perspective really gave me the feeling of scale! Can't wait to see it textured!

              Cheers,

P.S. I hope Lewis' friend's new discovery doesn't cost you too much re-work time!

Hi Pedro. Do you mean that you've actually communicated with Mr. Packer? I really enjoyed his book on the Forum, even though I am hardly a classical scholar. His monograph was the one of the principal sources I had when I modeled the forum so long ago for my "gut" basic urban design class in Yale's architecture program. I particularly appreciated his descriptions and images of previous reconstructions of the monument...the Beaux Arts "imaginary" versions were insane and beautiful.

You're doing great with your model. If it becomes too cumbersome as a single file, you might try saving out individual structures or areas as components, editing them in separate SketchUp windows, and then reloading them into your main composite file when your edits are complete. I do this all the time for large projects.

                  Pedro,
Just posted a link on another thread (Lewis's) regarding an article on the BBC website:

                  Might be worth a look

Hi all its my first post here, i think i'm going to "migrate" to sketchucation and continue to be a part of the "sketchunation"...

And just for some "heads-up" (or -down?), here are a couple of old posts from the "Old Forum".

What's up with the project, Pedro? I know you have moved back home but have you completely given up?

Then what's up with the local castle projects? Anything interesting and worth sharing? I'd really be interested in anything like that. 👍

Amazing and inspiring work. Like others, I'm wondering how your computer is performing with such a large model. Also, in the first image, I noticed your roof tile texture is running in the wrong direction on a few of the buildings in the foreground.

                      My avatar is an anachronism.

I'm blown away by this one. 👍 👍 I can't imagine the time that you've invested in this so far.

You know it's a great model when even the moire has a certain beauty to it.

That is a killer model. The Colosseum especially, I mean look at all those round stairs. Must have taken ages!

                                Thks Huggkruka,

actually its really fast to make in sketchup, i waste more time making the plans and sections in CAD, so that everything fits in right, if you have good and detailed plans later in sketchup its all done in a heartbeat, plus you learn a great deal about how the buildings were designed. 😄
In this case its just a well done section and the follow me tool, the hardest part was making the outer perimeter of the Colosseum with a line that had the same number of segments as arches so that each arch sits on a planar face and not in a curve, also each line segment had to be the exact same size so that every arch could be done of a single component, so that later in detailing i wouldn't have to make 88 arches, but just edit one of them. oh and also its important to say i just made 1/4 of the Colosseum, then mirrored it 4 times to get the full building.

Having previously made a rather pathetic attempt at making a Colosseum, I can fully appreciate the work that has gone into you model. Awesome work!
