Export to autocad
-
i have loaded a site plan of a series of buildings, roads etc into sketchup from google earth i am trying to exort it (2d view of site) into autocad so i can trace around buildings etc to produce a drawing of a site plan. what is best way to do this, have imported image from google earth scaled it and set it up, is it best to trace around outline in sketchup then export or just export image and trace using autocad. gouing to use sketchup site plan eventually to build models. what is best method to export image to autocad.
thanks

Id imagine you could miss out importing it in to sketchup and just import it straight in to autocad.
Alternatively you could trace the whole thing in sketchup, would then save you having to export form autocad to SU. I suppose it depends what your most comfortable with, really. Saying that, the SU trace probably wouldnt need cleaning up, whereas imported autocad geometry often does.

The best thing in a GE import is that it's to-scale already. What (and WHY) did you scale then?

hi
new to sketchup, didnt realise could import from google earth to scale, copied and pated mine so now know correct procedure.
having traced around sketchup site plan what is best method to export into autocad?thanks

Ah, so you only took an image export in GE and inserted it into SU via the File> Import menu?
The way is to activate your Google Toolbar from View > Toolbars (if it is not activated yet) and after navigating to the place you want to take a snapshot of in GE, press the "Get current view" button
.Although it is a black & white image only,it is perfectly scale, oriented to North and geolocated. Also, by toggling between snapshot and terrain with the Toggle terrain button
, you can have the place's elevation as well. -
hi
thanks for the help, having imported google earth snapshot which is 1:1 scale, then trace out areas etc. what is best way to export image into autocad so as to keep it to scale.
have tried to export using file, export then 2d image have 4 options bmp. jpeg. tiff, pgn.
what is best method can not seem to get it to work.

SU Pro can export directly into the DWG format. If you want a 2D export of the linework, you select the top view, turn on Parallel projection, and export full scale. Of course, if needed, you can export the 3D model to DWG format too.

hi
yes this is exactly what i need, i know that google earth exports to sketchup at 1:1 scale so all i require is to then export outlines from sketchup to autocad. could you tell me the procedre of doing this can not get it to work do not know what i am doing wrong.
could you be so kind as to go through the steps for me.many thanks

That's what Anssi says: IF you have SU Pro, the dwg/dxf formats will appear both under File > Export > 2D Graphics and File > Export > 3D model.
If you have SU Free however, you will only have raster formats as 2D and kmz as 3D. -
I had the same problem with fifthtexas and i used to do the workaround mentioned above.
But since you are using AutoCAD i found a tool named Plex.Earth which provides an evaluation version to download. This will be commercially available in a few days but you can have the full functionality until then to do your work. I think that you have to see it to believe it: i couldn't imagine that i would do the work i used to spend days in just some hours.
If you want to do the work using SU, the above procedure in SU PRO is the only affordable way. If you want to do the work inside AutoCAD take a look at Plex.Earth
