Flatten or drop an imported drawing
-
While the flatten.rb will work it may take some time (depending on the complexity of the cad file). If all you want is a straight 2-d version of a cad file you could load the file separately, go to paraline plan view (i.e. perspective off) and export as 2D dwg file. Then import the dwg file -- probably will be very quick compared to flatten.

You can even use the drape tool. Just place a flat plane underneath, select your 3d import and drape on the flat plane.

There is a drop.rb on Didier's site: http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/Ruby/en_geo_page.htm.
I have and use it from time to time. I don't know how this script differs from flatten.rb as sold by Smustard.
Edit: I just realized there is a significant difference between these scripts. "Drop" will move selected object(s) up or down; there is no flattening involved.

Killer idea to use the drape tool for 2d use.
Also saves the 3d model and much faster than [flatten]
Just select and using the [hide all unselected] ruby
export to whatever.Thx a bunch

Hi I'm new on here,
and was looking round for ways to flatten cad drawings. I had found the drape tool method by just prodding about, but its flawed - my drawing now has gaps in the lines, which repeating the drape function three times has failed to fix.
I draped the drawing as a component onto a blank oblong below. Fourth attempt, I exploded it, selected all the drawing and tried to drape it again like that - the programme crashed, (and has done so on three attempts to do that).Any further suggestions for making what should be a fab fix actually work?
Can't bear to go back to an untidy cad drawing, may have to invest $5 on the flatten.rb

Send me your drawing and I'll run flatten against it to show you how it works.

thanks

Fevvers, it was to you. You opened a thread over a year old.
If you don't care for the world seeing your file post it here. Or, you can sent it to info at smustard dot com, mention me, and I'll get it.
