Try turning all your lines options off in SU and check out the speed increase. I have noticed that in Autocad Max and also in Acrobat 3D that showing hidden lines slows things way down, yet this is a main feature of SU. Try working with hidden lines turned on in these programs, and watch em crawl. It seems to me that in comparison to this sketchup is not too bad for speed.

Xray with lines also seems faster than default shade mode and is comparable to other modeling speeds. Drawing in only wireframe is quite speedy, but editing faces with pushpull and so forth are not possible unless selection is made before entering into this mode.

Perhaps all that we need to speed things up, is more display flexability, and the ablility to edit and see lines lines or polygons in these modes.

    I see a plugin coming...

    Anyone???

      interesting observations, Creasia.

maybe it is a good idea to have a mode, where only the lines of the active group/component or active selection (that means, all geometry that is connected to the selected item; or in other words: all geometry that will be selected, if you tripple click the currently selected elements) are shown.
all other lines in the model are hidden.

on the other hand, inference with other parts of the model wouldn't work then, would they? cause then you can't snap to any edge/point anymore.

It is too bad that we can't snap to end and mid points with just faces showing. This on its own with display of lines not connected to mesh, could be a mode that would be very Open GL friendly.
