SU for linux?
-
Lewiswadswoth has had some success running it on WINE (a windows emulator for linux) but last time i checked it was a bit fiddly.
Heres the thread: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=9687
I think theres another thread somewhere about getting SU working, i'll have a look for it.

Bit more info here: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11412&p=79426&hilit=+sketchup+linux#p79426
although i swear there was another big thread on it, i'll go back to searching.

And a little bit mre info here: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=9237&p=57246&hilit=+sketchup+linux#p57246
although im not sure how up to date that info is. I reckon the best thing to do would be to talk to lewis and see what he says.
Good luck.

Thanks Remus, I'll look into it and thanks for searching the Forum... duh, I should have thought of that!

There's been some recent discussion in the Ruby forum (because the initial query related to problems with Ruby).
http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=9687In summary ... There is no native Linux version.
It can be done (see below), but its not perfect. I would not want to use it as my main SU setup, but I am interested in getting it working as an insurance policy.SU Windows runs in the Linux Win emulator (known as WINE), with varying degrees of success. If you have an Nvidia/Geforce graphics chip, then it works Ok with some minor Windows registry changes (see the other threads). Just install the windows version from within wine, make the refistry changes reboot and launch SU.
Some problems have been encountered with exporting and with Ruby scripts.
On the positive side, some report "better than Windows" performance.ATI and Intel graphics chips have a problem that seems to be solved by editing one of the Linux/ X Windows config files.
As this change affects the graphics acceleration, its clunky. There's a comment from the WINE lists (yes, yes) that suggests it may be fixable.I wonder if a better start point might be the Mac version? As OSX uses X, it would appear to be an easier adaptation (ie closer to a native Linux environment) than running through a more general Win emulation?
But that might be a theological issue (Mac -> Linux vs Win -> WINE -> Linux) and would probably need Google's intervention. -
With my Ubuntu with ATI Radeon 9800 I've not been able to use SU. It installs and starts, but the drawing area is black.

To fix the black screen problem with SU under WINE with Intel and ATI graphics cards, see this comment, and following ones.

It works - but you have now disabled acceleration in the X Windows config.

Yea, heard about that. But I struggles long to enable it so I'll stand this one out and hope for some other fix to show itself.

Check out ubuntu forums for info on running SU with wine.
This is a wine success story, works platinum. -
Thank you all for the great info. I'm still checking things out and will let you know how it turns out.

I suspect that how well SU runs on Linux is all a matter of hardware, from HDD to GPU.
Attached screen shot is SU running in XUbuntu booted from external PATA USB HDD on Asus P5N and 8800 GTS, (FX 4600 soft modded).
SU also seems to work well when I boot this drive form a P5K and 8800 GT and from P2B with 6800 GT.
Booting from Asus Z70va based laptop with ATI X700 I get the black screen, but the icons and pointer look normal, (have not tried modifying xorg.conf yet).
Booting from Intel DG945GCLF (mITX) with Atom and 945GC I get OGL error "ChoosePixelFormat Failed".
(but can get black screen booting from internal SATA disk).
Booting from Intel D201GLY2 (mITX) with SiS graphics I suggest never buying anything associated with SiS.
Booting from Asus EEEPC 4GS I get OGL error "ChoosePixelFormat Failed".
Wife's Via MB will not boot from the external drive. have not tried installing on her internal drive yet as she is still using Fiesty and I can only get it working with Hardy.
When I tried the same tests booting Ubuntu from a fast thumb drive it seems to work about the same, from a slow thumb drive the little man at the origin goes missing. -
So far it looks that only some users with nVidia graphics cards gets the best results. I got an ATI Radeon 9800 on my Ubuntu box and as with the rest of the ATI users SU on Wine is no go.
I have an 8800GT and 6800GT on my main rig, but I only run Vista on that.
