Auger blade
-
All,
any tips on making an auger or fan-type of blade that rotates around a central cylinder? I'm struggling!

here is a link to something like what I have in mind...but it says it was made using another program and imported. I'm wondering what the method would be in SU

See this model, also on the 3d Warehouse, as one example.
You've probably figured out that the Follow Me Tool does not quite work the way you would expect it to in this case.

well, I'm pretty much a total design beginner, so I don't even know how to draw the line that the follow me tool would follow...

First, I'd have a look at some of the tutorials for learning the SU basics, like the Follow Me tool.
Then check out this thread for twisted surfaces:

This should give you a start on the fan blade idea. For a blade some of the edges would need to be curved instead of straight. You might also do a search in 3DW or the Forums for a spiral staircase (I'm sure I've seen some.) This could be the basis for an auger.
Good luck

Does this help?
I have only modelled the basic blade and twist. You now need to model the leading section so that the cutting edge is sharp.
You will find skin.rb on this site under the Ruby section, although it is not really needed for this model.
The final twist has been smoothed, so select hidden geometry to see the construction.
Kind regards,
Bob
