Material Roughness
-
just a small wish for SketchUp 7:
below the slider for transparency in the material editor window I would like to see a similar slider for roughness - so that you can display frosted glass within SketchUp and do not need to export it to another application.
technically it is definitely possible (vista does it with aero )
(little side question: is the aero effect of windows vista entirely processed by the graphic card or does the processor have anything to do with that?
or lets formulate it differently: what can I make to stop vista running with 50-80% processor power (Core2Duo, 2,5 GHz) for five minutes at startup? is there anything I can do to change that?) -
A reflection slider would also be very cool
As for your second question, i think aero does run on the graphics card.
To speed up your computer on startup you basically need to stop some of the programs running at startup. The easiest way to do that is to just uninstall all the programs you dont need, alternatively theres a method for doing it inside windows (which i cant remember.) Im sure if you do a google search on it you'll get a plethora of answers.

a reflection slider would be great - is probably not possible in realtime though. if it is, I will start crying like a baby with tears of joy
concerning the vista. yes, I indeed hat a look at Control Panel > Administrative Tools > System Configuration > Startup. but I don't know much about a lot of these applications listed there. so I didn't turn off to many

If it could do roughness id imagine it could do reflectivity, theyd both be vector calculations if they were done using SUs current lighting system.

well, this is true actually. didn't think of it as vector based. but it is indeed.
does it make sense to have a glossiness-slider as well? or is it too much of a interface-complification? we have to be carefull to keep SU simple after all.all these addtional manipulators could be hidden by default though; and be expandable, if you desire more control.
ps: strange, if I start an hd-movie (eg trailer of Bond - Quantum of Solace) my processor rushes to 50-70% use, but it is not the player, nor any other application. it seems to be the system that is using all this power. and the movie doesn't play well at all. I am at a complete loss

I dont think a glossiness/roughness scale would add too much to the interface, its pretty self explanatory really.
