I was wathcing the behind-the-scenes stuff for Cloverfield. The production designer showed some screenshots of him designing one of the sets, and although it's unconfirmed, I could swear that it was SketchUp. Cool!

what a great movie that was, Cloverfield!

I loved the fact, that it was about the people and not about the monster itself. really convincing actors. and wonderful special effects embedded in these unsteady camera shots.

I have to see that movie again!

in which scenes did this guy use SketchUp?

How about the TV show 3300? My son and I were watching an episode where they were showing and animated needle of some kind and we were both sure the UI was SU? Anybody know?

I cannot confirm the above but can say that SU is used more extensively in the movie and gaming industries than one hears about. Unfortunately like in the Architectural realm where software elitism is prevalent so is it in those industries, no self respecting company will openly announce that they achieved such brilliance using a software that is freely available to the masses and has a name that sounds like a kinder-garden activity.

A friend and instructor of mine worked heavily on that film. I will ask him.

As for my own experience I have seen sketchup used on big budget films, games and TV spots. There are people in this industry using SU for some AMAZING design work, pushing its limits much farther than I thought possible. From sets to vehicles and other crazy things. I wish i could say exactly what, but I don't want some lame hollywood lawyer after me. ๐Ÿ˜„

If you want to see raw SU models in use, check out the book 'Art of Mass Effect.' Also, many times in this industry, a sketchup model is used as an underlay for a painting/photocomp or sketch. So it is tough to make out.

As for my own experience I use SU heavily in my conceptual work, along side my Art Director who is a LightWave master. SU/Vray combo produces results that are definitely comparable. With that said, if Google only made ONE upgrade for SU7 i would vote for high poly support. It is extremely difficult to bring in elements modeled in LW without SU simply bogging, even with polyreduce. If SU7 could support high poly models it would become a seamless part of the industry.

                well said, gaganraj!

and regarding the fact that this wish has been requested at least once in almost every thread of this forum, the Google guys are bound to do something about it ๐Ÿ˜†

Over here in the UK Architectural Profession Sketcup is making inways to mainstream acceptance more and more. You see a lot of respectable offices pulishing their work in sketchup without rendering in industry magazines like BD. I was suprised at first myself but its now pretty much accepted.

yeah, it is, but the "baby" gets pronounced (in the most sensual voice in a passionate tone) baby ...

As Pete says, SU is being used in TV and movies far more than most people realise. It's been used to aid the fly-on-the-wall shooting of hit shows like 24 for years. http://www.studiodaily.com/main/searchlist/4443.html
John Bacus was pushing it hard in this direction 4 years ago. http://studiodaily.com/main/technique/casestudies/feed.rss/4689.html

There doesn't seem to be the elitist snobbery in the Film Industry that appears to exist in sections of the architectural community...especially the education end of it. If it gets the job done and saves humongously expensive studio time that's all that matters to most people.

so we know now, that SketchUp helps movie productions.

I would love to see it the other way arround. what I really would like to see is a
"a small group of SCF people is stuck in SketchUp" movie, a bit like Thron:

"..they model their way through complicated geometry and only with united forces succeed to overcome every obstacle, for example by draping a footpath into an insuperable terrain.
when they are attacked by a horde of shadow bucks, the only way to defend themselves is to stamp a platform into the terrain and create an array of defence walls.

when one of the brave SCF heroes trips on an reversed faceand is in severe danger to fall through a hole, suddenly a small troop of Ruby Coders drops at an intersectionnearby and performes a quick series of geometry manipulations, cleaning upthe mesh and closing the faces, then flinging a bezier curvearound the fallen hero and creating a tube along it's path to secure him.."

oh, we should really write a screen play and then create a movie ๐Ÿ˜
thad could be such an exciting story!
