Location of a model, lighting
-
Hi everyone,
I just found this forum, trying to figure out how I can set up/change the location of my SU model. I have no idea where to place my question so I'll start here...
Ok, I'm working with the free SU version and I would like to change the location of my model in order to get some real shadow studies (I'm a landscape architect and I just discovered SU a couple of month ago). I think with the pro version you can just change the location but what can I do with the free version? Is there a plugin or a ruby available? where can I find something about placing a model to the original coordinations so that the south facade actually faces south. so far i'm only rotating the whole model...
I'm also looking for plugins or rubies for lighting and night scenes? what can you recommend and where can i find it? are there any free rubies or plugins available?
thanks a lot for your help!

if you want 360 degree sun movement you could go and download Kerkythea. Its very good for rendering

Hi Antje and welcome to the forums!
Yes, it's true that the Pro version has a Location tab in the Model info dialogue (interestingly, the Free version for Mac has it, too but the Free version for Windows does not).
Anyway, Jim Foltz (our ruby related moderator) has a plugin that would do it for the free version, too. Download it here and unzip the content to the Plugins folder of your SketchUp application. -
thanks, now the model is placed
any idea for the lighting issue i have? i need it mostly for outdoor lighting, so nothing super complicated with textures, transparency and so... just for some lighting in gardens and for facades.
thanks

Hi antje
To change the orientation without rotating the model, in SU Pro you change the North Angle in Solar Orientation which is found in Window/Model info/Location.
Unfortunately if you are using the Free version it may not be their. I dont have the free version loaded on this machine to check. -
You can set the day (in a year) and the time (in a day) at the Shadow setting dialogue (Window menu) or have the whole toolset presented from the View > Toolbars option, You can even animate the shadows - see attached file (click on the scene tabs for animation).

How do you animate shadows?

You set up a scene with time in the morning then set up another one with time in the evening. See attached file (click on the Scene 2 tab)
