Ok there have been a few requests for this. This is a Windows-only fix to increase the maximum image size handled by OpenGL in SU from 1024 square to 2048 square. Use at your own discretion.
There is no way to attach a .reg file so I'm giving it in plain text. This has the advantage in that it dispels the mystery...you get what you see. For the technically challenged that later want to remove this registry entry, just type regedit in the Run box on the Start menu, follow the registry path given below and delete the MaxGLSize key. By default there is normally only be a single Default key in the Textures section.

Just copy/paste the text below into Windows Notepad and save as MaxGLSize.txt then change the file extension from txt to reg and double-click to enter the info. (I give the long version to avoid the inevitable crop of MaxGLSize.reg.txt problems):-

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\SketchUp6\Textures]
      "MaxGLSize"=dword:00002048

I did consider that, Coen, but some folks don't like applying things to their system settings that they can't actually see...hence the text format.
It does what it says; it raises the bar on the size of image you can import into SU (without image degradation under OpenGL) from 1024 pixels square to 2048.

The higher figure is supposed to be the natural maximum size for OpenGL, but I have seen some discussions in which even higher numbers are mentioned.

            Nice contribution Alan.
Does it work for XP and for Vista?

Well, it ought to work on XP. It was released by Google to the Beta team for that purpose, but I just tried it on my new Vista machine and it appears not to be working on that. 😞

I suppose that's hardly surprising; I'm having all manner of problems working with images in SU on my new system....including SU shutting down without so much as a Bugsplat.

is there any reason the number can't be higher than 2048?

2048 is supposedly the in-built limitation of OpenGL.

I think this is a Windows only setting (otherwise it could be compatible in the two OS's and would've been built into SU natively already).

                            Gai...

Well, the registry edit is for SketchUp only, not for OpenGL globally. So I was thinking that there might be an Mac equal.

Thomthom, Thanks for responding. On of reasons I switched to Mac
was so I wouldn't have to concern myself with the innards of the
                                system.

I have no idea of how to go about looking for this information.
Maybe someone that is knowledgeable could chime in? Of if someone
can lead me through the search process I will have a go. 👍
