I want SketchUp to use my default style
-
Hi,
I think this has been asked before, but how do you get SketchUp on launch to use the default style I have created. I prefer the original yellow select option and the "cream" and blue front and back face colours. I have made the amendments needed and saved it as: "My Default Style". But on starting SketchUp I have to choose this stlye as it insists on using its original settings. I think I remember someone suggesting creating a new file and saving it after I have chosen my own style. and then to just use this as a template file. Its a workaround I suppose, but surely I should be able to choose what my style preference is on launch?
Any solutions appreciated.
Thanks.Mr S

Hi
Do this: after you create your default style, save (or copy) it to the Templates folder (Win) of your SU application in program files> Google > Google SketchUp 6 > Templates (or something similar on Mac).
Now go back to SU, open the preferences window (Window menu) and go to the templates tab. Choose your default template and next time you open a new file, it will be yours. -
The location of the templates folder is not quite intuitive on the Mac
HD/library/application support/google sketchup 6/sketchup/resources/en-US-templates

Hi Gaieus,
The Templates folder on my PC is not so simple either.
The only templates folder I could find was here:
C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\TemplatesNevertheless, I just created a new Templates folder in the root folder of SketchUp 6
Then in System/Preferences I pointed the Templates location to my new file.
SketchUp now loads with my own preferences. Thanks.Mr S

Hi Mr S, if you'd like to have your new template and the default templates show up together in the preferences > Templates list, then you should save your custom template into the default SketchUp templates folder.
As you indicated, the default location for Templates is here: C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\Templates
Cheers,

Ha! Yes, I have that folder, too. (I must have simply "copied" my Templates folder from v5 before... )
Sorry for "misleading" and thanks Craig for the corrections! -
Hi CraigD,
Yes, I like everything to be in order.
I will add my style preference to the default Templates folder as you suggest.
Thanks.Mr S

Here is another way.
Make a new file. Make a rectangle on the ground plane. Make whatever changes you want to the object you made using the styles pane (choose your style or make a new one). Delete the object. Save the file with a name of your choosing in some nice stable place on your hard drive. Close the window. Open Preferences (on a Mac under the Sketchup menu) choose Templates, browse to where you saved your file and choose it as
your template.Open a new file. Make an object, it will have the characteristics of your saved style.
