Drawing irregular floor pattern problem

sigh.......its me again.
If i am using line tool to trace out a curved irregular floor pattern (so that i can add a material to it), how to constrain all these lines to a base axis so that it will make a face. Using shift does not work as it only lets me draw squared shapes at red gree axis.

If you go "Top view" (Standard views), SU will tend to draw on the red/green (horizontal) plane.
However you can also draw a huge rectangle before starting and use that as a "drawing board" - SU will tend to draw "on face". -
