      Hi All,

I just noticed something interesting: When I download the Current View from GE to SU, I tend to place the building of interest, in my case churches, in the middle of the GE view. In SU When I turn on both the snapshot and the GE Terrain, the snapshot flat image intersects the terrain image in the middle with the intersecting line generally running east to west.

Of course, this makes the location of the model right on this crux between the views. Unless the land is flat, it means that the model will have terrain issues that need to be addressed.

I wonder if you put the focus of interest in GE off to one side, the terrain problems would be minimized?

      Regards,
      Tom

Tom, first of all thanks for starting new topics over here already

Well, that's indeed interesting (and certainly rises a couple issues) could you provide a placemark in GE for us to try this out?
I also live in a hilly place but I have never noticed this. I could imagine this with a dale-land (?) but where you live, there isn't such (unless I'm mistaken).

          Hi Gaieus,

Regarding the new board, I'm a real sucker for folloing instructions.

Here's the location of one of the sites I downloaded this morning: Hoarwithy, Hentland, county of Herefordshire; 51 Degrees 57 minutes 40.37 seconds North, 2 degrees 39 minutes 44.82 seconds West.

Herefordshire is a pretty hilly county in England. We're very near the mountains in Wales.

I know, Tom, remember from the old board.

I can find it this way, too, but what I meant was to attach a kml file (maybe I need to enable kml attatchments first? πŸ˜’ )

I can't have a look at it now (as I'm sitting in my office where I do not have GE installed) but when home, I'll check it out (unless someone else comes around and answers).

A kml file is for containing the geolocation in GE.

Better start from the other end though.
Go to any model in the Warehouse (say yours for instance) and download the kmz file (the GE one). Don't open it, just save it somewhere.

Now rename the extension to zip (after all it is a zip file) and open it. There you find the kml file that contains the geolocation (and some other data - I guess whatever you write as a description in the WH etc.).

In there, you will find some folder(s):

                • one called "models" and a dae file in it (that's actually an xml format for collada) that contains all the geometry and texture info for your model
                • and an "images" folder (if you applied images) that contains the images you used.

Both the kml file and the dae file are in xml format that you can open and even edit in a plain text editor. Yes, open them and see those things; even I can understand some of them (note that I have never studied anything about computering "officially" πŸ˜„)

But this is just talking about it.

What you can do in GE is to go to a place and insert a placemark on the ground somewhere. then this can be saved into your places. now if you right click on it and say "save as" (I think it works this way) you can save it anywhere on your hard drive. This is actually already in kml format so this is what we are talking about.

If you cannot attch it here (because kml is not allowed for instance), compress it into a zip file. (I'll check out attachment permissions at the week-end anyway.)

Wow, this is really fun πŸ˜• πŸ˜•

The kml file for the location I mentioned earlier is attached as a .zip file ( I Hope.)
