[Plugin][$] FredoSpline - v2.6a - 01 Apr 24
-
I have always wanted a bezier tool in SketchUp that behaves like in 2D vector programs such as Freehand or Affinity Designer.
Here is an old little test I did with paperjs where I made a simple drawing tool in the browser.
Click to create straight lines. Click and hold and drag to create smooth corners.
What I like is the control and the preview of the next curve segment before you click to place it.
Close the curve to create a new curve.
(In this little test you can't go back and edit already made curves.)http://pixero.com/old/paperjs/PenTool.html
This is exactly like how it works in for example Freehand (Which in my humble opinion was a much better vector program than Illustrator before Adobe bought and killed it.)
Would it be possible with FredoSpline?
-
@Pixero:
This is what I suggested: single click for Corner, click & drag for Bezier Smooth, Backspace for last input Undo. Rather standard cross platform behavior. -

Fredo, is Covert curves command able to alter radius of already existing fillets (in polycorner arc curve)? Or at least remove all fillets (= radius 0)?

If you wish to remove all fillets, then SWAP it to Polyline.
Remember the difference between Edit, Swap and Convert:
EDIT allows to change the parameters (as well as control points) of a single existing FredoSpline curve. Actually, you can also change the type.
- SWAPchanges the type of an existing FredoSpline curve. The benefit of Swap is that you can preselect several curves
- CONVERTis used to make a FredoSpline curve of a given type from one or several non-FredoSpline sequences of segments. Indeed, it also works with a FredoSpline curves; in which case, it would be equivalent to Swap.

thank you for clarification, Swap function is divine as well as all toolset

HOW TO UPDATE FOR THE LATEST VERSION
-
Fredo, here is a small but important suggestion:
When editing* polycorner's fillets with mouse scrolling (or slider) it'd be great to have ability to snap to user defined rounding values (like 10\50\100 cm)
It could be implemented by continuously pressing one of modifier keys while scrolling
*- Usually people work with 2+ digits after point precision, and using mouse scroll\slider nowdelivers bad radius values.
Thank you for attention -

Thank you for attentionMaybe I'll add an explicit configuration parameter, because there are issues with guessing the right increment:
- imperial and other exotic units could be used
- the order of magnitude is difficult to infer, as curves are drawn outside of context. You wish 10/50/100 cm, but another user may want 10/50/100 m)
-
BTW For some reason Profile Builders assemblies don't like closed polyacrc curves- they need to be converted to regular polylines (or exploded) in order to be treated as paths

I don't have Profile Builder installed. This is strange, because FredoSpline generate geometry as true Sketchup curves, with some extra attributes. So, it should be transparent to Profile Builder.
The problem with closed curves is the start point of the curve, which may not be what you would visually expect.

Hi Fredo,
I want to report to you what seems to be bugs with the plugin in SU2021:-
Trying to click and drag a control point often results in no action at all. That's especially true when zoomed in for precison movements, regardless of the number of segments, and even deactivating sticking to inference points. After many attempts, sometimes the control point moves. But it's very hit-and-miss, making the plugin unusable for complex works. Many other times, the control point stops moving before you are done editing it.
-
I can't seem to find a way to control the weight/angle at each side of the control point. Maybe I'm missing something here, or maybe it is not an implemented feature yet.
-
When you add a control point in edit mode, the plugin immediately exits the edit mode. So the edit mode has to be reselected each time you want to modify the control point that has just been added. And in doing so, everytime the plane you selected (for example XY or XZ) gets reset. So it's quite likely that you forget about reselecting the correct plane each time, which ends up in wrong edits.
Hope this help in hunting bugs. Let me know if I can help with experimenting, or just uploading a vid of the problems.

This must be very specific to your configuration or to your model, as nobody reported such problems in SU2021 (or other versions of SketchUp).
It might be that your mouse is slightly desynchronized from the visual feedback you see on the screen. In general, clicking outside the curve will exit the tool.
-
To move a control point, hover over the point until you see an orange disk. Click-Drag on it, or Click-Release-Drag.
-
For weight / angle, which curve are you referring to? A mousewheel on the small pin should change the parameters
It would help to have a video of the problem, because I have no hint on what the problem could be with the information you give.
Fredo

This is enigma for me as well. The brown tension slider (in edit mode for local fit spline for example) controls only one side, no effect on other.
P.S. In attached file, I can't make smooth areas, why is that?
