Gimson Chest
-
This is based on Nancy Hiller's take on a chest designed by English furniture designer Ernest Gimson (1864-1919). I believe Hiller used white oak for hers but I found some English brown oak to texture my model.

what a nice chest - is this lovely somehow "tic tac toe"-ornament modeled? -
I did model the pattern on the front based on a printed pattern supplied by Hiller with her article in Fine Woodworking Magazine. The oak leaves, acorns and numbers for the year are just pushed into the surface. I used V-grooves for the outer grid pattern and the small squares have wedge-shaped cuts like the original. I was being lazy about the organic patterns and the numbers.
