Oculus Quest

Hey Oli, long time..
Why the Quest and not the Rift?
Is the Rift not more powerful for 3D VR apps and PC based where Quest is Android based, only advantage I can see is the Quest is untethered right? -
Here is my first ever go on Google Tilt Brush. Just did a quick island with volcanos etc.
No instructions, tutorials. Just started painting in the air....in 3D....in VR! Itās magic!
I can walk around my living room painting a jungle with a stream running through haha!
Can even import models and starts painting them! You can even paint with light itās mind blowing!

Thanks for the update Oli. Great to "see" you around. Maybe we can meet in VR someday! We have clients who could totally use (and afford) this--it's we who are behind the times.
I think I downvoted your comment by mistake and it wonāt let me change it sorry!
Of course dude! If anyone gets an oculus or already has one, send me a message here and Iāll give you my username.
I canāt tell you how amazing it is to draw and paint in VR.
You can also CAST WHAT YOU ARE SEEING IN VR TO A CHROMECAST OR CELLPHONE!
So when Iām painting (or trolling people in games), other people in the room can see it on the TV!

How people use VR attached to a computer Iāll never know! I play FPS games like Pavlov and Paintball so being untethered is a game changer. In 5 years there probably wonāt be any wired VR kits; the same way corded house phones all but vanished.
Itās brilliant. I can download films and take it on a plane etc. Can take it to meetings. No PC required. Take it to friends house easily. I am astounded by how good films look. I had a PSVR and it wasnāt very good, used it twice.
Itās very powerful mate and performance is absolutely fine for me. I use it mainly to play poker and watch films in what feels like a huge cinema with 50 foot screen. The games are so funny. Iāve seen some pretty obscenely funny stuff!
In Big Screen, YouTube or Netflix it genuinely feels like you are looking at a private cinema screen, absolutely no eye strain at all. You can watch 3D films in a VR cinema with other people around the world. Itās crazy. Itās a PC stuck to your face. Mind. blown.
Iām not even going to mention the 3D porn lol

I do not think Quest will work with Enscape, Twinmotion, Lumion or Unreal, am I wrong?

IT works with unreal. Process is the same as for the Oculus go - Just with a bit more power. THE big plus to me is untethered, 6dof and reasonable good power (maybe 1/10 of a grx 1060)
Yeah, that's the problem, I need to run heavy models with decent resolutions, I need a beefy 1080ti at the minimum for smooth navigation, untethered means no beefy GPU.
But as gaming goes online I think the Quest is ready for a VR gaming revolution. -
Are they android based? If not then no.
If you want powerhouse for complex work,, of course go for Rift.
For sketchup complexity, quest all day long. Itās important to consider that this Quest is more powerful than the 10 year old dual core iMac that I have done 99% of my 3D work on. Itās the rendering where you need big power.
The quest is rumoured to have outsold all other VR units combined....in one month. Sold out everywhere here. So no guessing where all the support, development and money is going in the future.
-
Gaming revolution? Absolutely.
I have played Xbox for over 10 years online. Iām ashamed to admit it. But I like an hour or two teabagging people in the evening. Lol
Recently Iāve become so incredibly bored with what is essentially button bashing on a 2D screen. There is no involvement, no innovation, no fun. Theyāve succeeded in making gaming boring. I played Sea of Thieves for 12 months, I help people do quests and dig treasure up for an hour or so......and then simply throw it all in the water to wind them up. Thatās how boring it is! Lol
Anyway 1 minute into Quest. Sold.
No itās not Battlefield graphics, itās mainly unreal engine stuff. But wow. Have you ever dual wielded guns, have one pointed at different doors while ducking behind a crate and looking behind you? Itās impossible on Xbox with a controller.
In Pavlov, you donāt press X to reload. You drop you magazine, place another in, cock your gun and raise it to your face! Imagine that in a tense gunfight!!!
Itās not the graphics that amaze me in games.....itās the sheer involvement. I must be using a hundred times more calories than regular gaming/entertainment.
VR poker is so funny. People point guns at you, smoke cigars, drink beer, throw footballs, stand up and threaten you face to face lolol......genuinely funny gaming. The only downside is people doing that stupid floss dance and dabbing in VR lol

You want to say that you show in the Oculus Quest helmet is like a 50 foot screen ?
Another little question Can you control and manage your PC (like with a tablett you can run a program on the PC with programs like TeamViewer, RealVNC etc... )
-
I did VR meditation last night with some guy from Boulder Colorado lol
So weird

Oy! do not be dissing Love Island, I did a ton of work on that show, but yeah, I'd never watch it either.

Yes. When you look into your Quest, it feels like youāre sat in a cool lounge with a huge screen in front of you.
You can also go into virtual cinemas where it 100% genuinely feels like you are looking at cinema screens!!!
This is what I mainly got the queat for....watching movies on planes and when travelling etc.
Also when the girlfriend puts on that stupid Love Island on TV I can sit there in blissful VR ignorance.
Yes Pilou. You can mirror your PC screen to the quest and do anything you want. Itās called Virtual Desktop app for quest. Works great. You can even stream your PC to a public cinema and random people from around the world can watch what you are watching on your PC screen!!! Or invite friends for a cinema night.
-
No headaches and vertigo ? How many times you support this on your head ? 10, 20 minutes, more ?

Lol shit sorry mate didnāt realise
Canāt stand it though.
I plug earphones in and go into my VR world lol. Sheās watching garbage on a 42ā TV, Iām sat in my own private cinema looking at educational things.
Another thing thatās crazy....you can setup a virtual mesh or āguardianā around you. You can do this sat down or stood up. You can do 99% of VR stuff sat down BTW. You only need to stand for involving shooting games etc.
Anyway, when you step outside of this virtual mesh, you seamlessly enter back into the āreal worldā by way of the front facing cameras! So you can actually step out of your VR bubble, make a brew and come back. All with the headset still on!! Youād have to see it to believe it. Itās like military technology at consumer level now.
Itās super freaky and amazing!

For quick and easy testing I still use the Rift & Gtx1080. But the Quest is replacing my Go for taking my projects to clients.
The Quest won't be sufficient at all if a gtx1080ti is needed. Running heavy models can be done up to some point - you'll just have to put in a lot of time though to make it work; reducing shaders, reducing the amount of individual objects etc. Here's a nice small tech video on developing for the Quest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvMQUz0g_Tk
Some people are developing tech for streaming the VR images to the GO/Quest from a powerful desktop (google for a video on 'ALVR' for instance). You need a 5Ghz wifi. I tested this with Google Earth VR using the Quest - it works ok-ish. I do see much potential for this if they keep developing (early alpha at the moment) - the headset would be just a 'dummy' and the heavy lifting would be done by your powerful laptop/desktop.

No headaches. No eye strain.
I get motion sickness from crazy quick movement in fast paced shooter games. But I learned a trick where you close one eye for a minute, it goes away lol. Pro gamer tips!! I only get this once every couple of days. Itās like a disorientation feeling that quickly passes.
10-20 minutes?
Erm I was up til 6am for several nights playing with this mate!!! Took headset off and itās daylight!
But in all seriousness I can comfortably do 2-3 hours watching a film, no problem at all.
It doesnāt even feel the screen is close to your face, like I said, genuinely feels like a cinema (and you can pick where you want to sit)
-
Yes all rendering will be done by the cloud.
Console gaming is finished IMO. Stadia/cloud rendering is definitely the future. You donāt even need a console, itās like Netflix but for 4K games. Just download the app and go.
Just let google render everything for you.
The Quest is then essentially just a window into remote hardware.

Yes you can work from / stream your pc-desktop to the quest. The app is called VirtualDesktop.
