OK, so I've created an ideal world set of layers that I work with, it's quite a few (like in many many) as I'd like the control for use with SKALP, visibility and being able to do some estimation (with Estimator, still to be implemented).

My current template file is quite huge (about 20MB, before any geometry and texturing is added) after setting everything up (particularly SKALP with the relevant section texture mapping for use "by layer").

I also use LAYERS ORGANIZER (great extension) to help me manage the layering.

I am aware of Tig's extensions that can read layer naming (and RGB colours associated with the various layers, as an option) into SU from a TXT file as well as his extension that can export layer naming from SU to a TXT file. In fact, I used these extensions when I was creating my template a while ago. (Give them a go, great extensions.)

Ideally, I would like to be able to insert and remove layers, based on an external TXT file (typically to be kept in the same location as the SU model), using an extension. It would read the TXT file, compare with what is currently in the model (display absent layers differently, say in italics, in a dropdown or similar method), be searchable (for a specific alpha / numeric match if one exists) and not conflict with SKALP or LAYERS ORGANIZER (maybe somehow integrate with LAYERS ORGANIZER?) in some way.

In this way I hope to keep the flexibility of the layering but will be able to keep the number of layers down (and thus smaller file sizes).

Does anyone know of something along those lines that I may have somehow missed?

Hmmm, while searching for something else I came across this old post of mine above. I found something that works pretty well, check it out: Layer Manager (thanks to Didier Bur for this gem).

Hi juju, I assume you're referring to TIG's 'Layer to List & Layers from List' plugins..?

I don't understand what you're asking for other than what these two plugins doo? I use them for every job; depending on the type of project I'm about to start I can import txt files that I've set up for new work, demolition, existing [base building], etc, etc..

          purpose/expression/purpose/....

Hi Utiler, yes and no. Initially I used those two extensions to help set up my layering. Once layering structure was established I now use Didier's extension I mentioned above. I no longer have to have all layers in a file, I can now bring them in as I need.

Ok, I might have to look at it too. Layer management is a pest in SU so the easier the better!

Is there any manual / video tut's on this plugin?

AFAIK only what is available on EW page for it.
