I created a simple 2-D template for the tails and pins of a dovetail joint. So far I've been moving the 2-D template onto the end of a board and drawing lines around it. Then, after moving the template out of the way, I've been using push/pull to remove the unwanted "wood". But push/pull doesn't go all the way through the end of the board. It leaves a rectangular face that is connected to the far face of the board and I can't remove it. And I tried follow-me but that just completely distorts things. What am I doing wrong?

Probably part of learning nuance how to use pushpull. Sometimes snapping to a point such as the corner on the back face of the board "tells" pushpull where to stop exactly and cut the face. Sometimes your model may not be quite square and pushpull can't make a clean cut. You should be able to erase that left-over face, so you may have to post a file for someone to see what the problem is.

Using a "template"--you should be able to place a copy of the template on your shape and then have the edges on that face to push-pull(If the "template" is a component you need to explode the copy for the edges to be on new face). You don't have to "trace" it. You are transferring or re-cycling the edges directly on the face. Sometimes you can just reuse a joint you've already made by adding the 3d joint to a new shape, or resizing or shaping a copy of board that already has the joint.

It sounds to me as if you are working way too hard to create the dovetail joint in the first place but as to the issue of Push/Pull not seeming to clear the sockets, how about upload the SKP file so we can see what you have?
