monolith chair.pngHere's another piece I saw on the 1stdibs.com web site. The designer calls the funny little half-round shape a monolith, and she uses it in furniture as well as sculpture. She also says her chairs update a Shaker design. I have my doubts. Nevertheless, the chairs were fun to model.
      Enjoy.

        Yay! He's back.

Interesting model. I'm not convinced that sculptors should design furniture.

Not sure I concur with that blanket statement, but this sculptor should not πŸ˜‰

            Yay!

The chairs don't give me the Shaker feeling, but I suppose the tabs could be helpful to hang them up.

              donald judd side chair.pngDave,
Here's a side chair (or maybe a corner chair) by the minimialist sculptor Donald Judd. Probably not the most comfortable seat, but the geometry is nice.

Say Dave, my niece needs some counter stools, and wants to help me build them in the shop. You're the Chair Master, have you seen any nice designs I could take a look at??

                  J63 stool.pngJoe,
I'm not too sure about the master part. And I haven't done many stool models. The most recent was this J63 stool, by Elvind Johansson. It's about 18 in. high, but you could easily lengthen the legs. If you go to the FineWoodworking.com web site and click on the Projects & Plans tab, you'll find several plans for stools. Whatever design you follow, I'd strongly recommend downloading the Rake and Splay plugin; it should make short work of getting the angles for the legs just right.

Welcome back. πŸ‘ Nice model of an unusual design. Have to throw in with Dave R's comment about sculptors maybe shouldn't design furniture. Really like the j63 stool model. πŸ‘

Thank you, tuna. Wendell Castle, who died last Friday at age 85, sculpted a lot of weird furniture. I think he proves Dave R.'s point pretty well.
