I have a very specific question. Is there a way to apply a material to the back side of a face. I have some that are easier to get to the front side but the back side is also viable so I want to go back and add a material but i don't want to navigate inside the small space nor swap color swap to get it there. So just curious if this is an available function and i just don't know the right key to press.

I don't know what "swap color swap" is but if you have the surface selected you can color the back face by dragging texture from the palette into the back face box of the entity window.

Fredo's ThruPaint (a great plugin!) can also selectively paint back faces.
