I'm curious if anyone has drawn a ramp (with a constant slope) that travels up around the sloping sides of a truncated cone. The example I'm testing has a base with a 30'radius and a top with a 20' radius offset from the bottom by 16'. I'm trying to wrap a 5' wide ramp around the cone from bottom to top at a constant slope of 1:12 to mimic an accessible ramp (let's forget about landings for the moment!)

If one drew a spiral where each band were offset from the next by a constant distance and projected it down onto a cone from above, the ramp could start with a shallow slope and the slope would increase as the radius of the cross section decreased. The question is how to account to the impact of the shape of the cone on the slop of the ramp.

If I can get a spiral projected onto the cone, I can use CLF Shape Bender to wrap a ramp along its surface, but the initial geometry (unfortunately, likely involving calculus) has got me stuck.

On a related question, I worked out an approximate way to draw the appropriate curve on an unwrapped version of the code I'm drawing. But I don't know if there is any way in Sketchup to re-wrap an unfolded shape back into a cone.

Thanks for any ideas you may have.

      Ned

Some images of what you want to achieve to go along with your description would be very helpful.

Maybe this model will be of use.

Nothing is worthless, it can always be used as a bad example.
