I fond a model of the ship from the Martian online and was trying to use it in an animation. However the Mesh was horrible so I decided to make it again from scrath myself. However I lost track and kit bashed together this instead.

The idea is that it is an Asteroid Hunter taking out any rocks that may threaten Earth. The model is meant as an update to this one made last year: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56191b03e4b058853bdbfa1e/56191c6de4b049990b71ecb3/5623ae0be4b01226f1134de6/1484601838640/?format=1500w

I put together a little guide to show how I get the illustrative effect, its an updated version of one I did a few years ago from the model above. This one is quite rough as I rushed it through.

I first export three images from Sketchup: 1. Shadow map 2. flat colour with hidden edges 3. Profile edges. I also take a Clay Render from Thea with added glass.

In Photoshop I layer all of the images in the following order (Shadow, lines, flat colour, clay render).

I set the line overlay to a multiply blending option.

I select the shadow layer and set it to 100 black.

I set the opacity of the Shadow layer to between 30-75% depending on the scene lighting.

From the flat colour layer I select various sections to be brought into the main scene. Here I have selected the window frames.

I can then change the colour, pattern or shading of individual elements. I often colour sections in very contrasting colours in SU so that they can easily be selected and modified in Photoshop.

Glass effects are easily produced using Gradients. Here I have used a default style and then changed the colour to Blue.

I can then add in many more details, for models such as this I often use decals scanned in from Airfix and model kits then brush them up in photoshop or illustrator.

          Finished

No problem, I have been meaning to do one for a while. I am working on a bigger tutorial Sketchup > VR so hoping to post results soon just not having much luck this week.
