(Not Responding) How long would you wait???
-
So I was using the scale tool on a very small area which SU apparently didn't care for and it went to the white screen not responding spinning wheel of doom mode.
Yes I am familiar with why this happens and I have everything set to minimize the issue..I had auto save off because on large models it's a serious hindrance to workflow and I usually save every time I begin a new sequence but forgot this time..worked for hours today and forgot to save and now white screen...
My question is how long should I wait before giving up and accepting I lost my work today and force close the program to start from where I began this morning...all over again?
So far it's been about 30 mins...any hope it will wake up?

there are two flavours of 'not responding'...
if one core of your CPU is maxed out, then waiting can eventually end...
if there is minimal CPU usage, something has probably gone wrong and waiting won't help...

Can you elaborate? CPU% for locked up SU Window is around 29%

if you have 4/5 cores, 29% could represent a single core near 100% plus some overhead for system on other chores...
SU only uses a single core for it's background activities...
on my core duo I'd see 50 > 55 percent when SU is working hard...
you need to supply your system details, to make it easier to help...

I generally wait for a period equivalent of the time it takes me to go to the toilet.....if it hasn't responded by then I'll go and get a drink or make a cup of coffee and maybe even make a light snack.....if it's still a no show I wait wait another 5 minutes or so....
....if that totals 15-20 minutes or so I generally lose patience and close it off and hope that most of it is still there when I reopen it.....!!
For me it mostly happens when I import something like a large tree model, or if I have a complex shape using something like Shape Bender....although I will be more patient with Shape Bender because it generally comes good at some point, but sometimes it scares the crap out of me...!!
I share your frustration though, especially if it happens when you haven't saved before it 'hangs'.
Fortunately though, most often an 'autosave' will get me out of trouble more often than not...!!
