2015 CRASH WHEN IMPORTING 2D IMAGES MAC

Hope this is not redundant. Just upgraded from v8 to 2015 version 15.3.329. Mac OS 10.9.5, 2014 MacbookPro. Vray 2, most current service pack (3) installed.
Just got down to making some very simple interior shots for a website that sells vinyl decals. So far, all .pngs, and .jpegs cause a crash when importing as Image. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
I can bring the images in through the VfS Material window, but it comes in as a texture, not optimal in this workflow.
Having just installed upgrades over the weekend, I'm not certain if I have something set incorrectly. Any help appreciated.

do they import correctly with Vray disabled?
what other plugins do you have, are they all new [v2015] versions...
just a couple of things worth checking...
