Extending a non-axis orientated line

I'm developing a router jig to carve guitar necks on and it bases it's shape on two profiles, one at the first fret and one at the 9th fret. I have drawn these out on sketchup and have lofted them to get the neck profile, but I need to extend it further out at each end without distorting the original shape. Is there a way of extending a line without changing it's axis? I have tried drawing an adjoining line and using the snap 'parallel to edge' function, but I can't get it to work properly.
Any ideas? Am I missing something totally obvious to everyone else but me?

Thank you!! That was just what I needed to know. How do people know these tricks? Do you just discover them by accident or are they written down somewhere?

Nearly all those infos are in the official help:
