I have attached 2 configurations below. One is of a laptop and the other is for a workstation.

Workstation Graphic Card: NVIDIA Quadro K5000 x2
Laptop Graphic Card: IntelHD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA Quadro K5100M

My question is, How come the viewport for sketchup is faster and smoother on the laptop when compared to the workstation?

CPU clockspeed plays a role, SU doesn't really gain with workstation class GFX cards, SU isn't optimized that way

I have noted that this is the same with 3DS Max as well. The view ports are faster on the laptop.

to get the best out of workstation class GFX cards the software needs to be optimized for it, often you can get a special driver from either the GFX card company website or software website that will help augment the software on the workstation class GFX card, for 3DS Max there should be a driver that you can download that will help it make better use of the workstation GFX card
