      Can one make a shadow translucent...so that the material underneath it is visible?

        It's supposed to work like that. Go to window > shadows.

        On that dialog click the top right icon for detailed settings.

        Adjust dark and bright levels.

          Thank you, JQL.

          after checking the object carefully, I realized that there was another object/colored layer on top of it. After deleting it, the shadows appeared as they should.
