finally seeing a different technology than SawStop's
this time it's bosch with a jobsite table saw:

after all this time, i don't think we'll be seeing SawStop spreading to the other manufacturers but with bosch doing it their own way, maybe we'll see their tech being licensed more affordably or manufacturers developing their own system.

I just came from dinner with a fellow who works for Bosch. He said the saw is expected to be available in October 2015. You can see from the video that Bosch has come up with a different way to drop the blade out of harm's way when it touches skin. Not sure exactly how that works (and my dinner companion wasn't offering many details). But it's clear that Bosch has devised something different from the SawStop technology--Bosch claims its system won't damage the saw blade, and it allows for two misfires before the safety cartridge must be replaced.
It's definitely good that there are now competing safety technologies out there. It's likely to generate still more such safety features and hasten the day when all tablesaws will have some sort of blade-dropping mechanism to protect users' fingers.
I think it's also important to point out that blade-dropping technology isn't the last word in safety gear. Having a good riving knife behind the blade is also critical; so is a well-designed blade guard that can actually be used instead of discarded. My Bosch dinner companion says the company invested a lot in designing a good, usable blade guard for its new saw.dh

as far as the detection, i imagine the blade has a charge applied to it and if your body touches the blade, the circuit closes and the safety feature activates?
