File sizes

Can anyone please help!!!
some of my models are increasing in size by 3 times. They might go from 2mb and then on the next save or autosave go to 10mb, 20mb or whatever. I have tried purging without success. One thing i have noticed though when deleting groups from the model and then purging i find the groups are not reduced in the file b way of Window > Model info > Statistics > groups. I thought that purging would have reduced these unused/unwanted items from within the model.
What can i do -
