I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if there is some configuration I missing. For example, I open a model that has a smooth look. If I change the style then the mesh becomes visible. However, after that, the original style is lost and I cannot get it to be smooth again. Below are before and after pics. Suggestions?

the first image is not a "smoothed" model. How (what steps) are you trying to get it to be smooth again?

Correcting my earlier comment. It could be you had a style that did not have edges checked on. You should be able to get the same look by going to the style and clicking edges off in the edge style tab. Still that is not the same as "smoothing".

But what am I saying? I see now you are advanced user, so there must be some further mystery. Sharing the model (or a representative part if you can't share it all) might help others figure it out.

Triple-click to select the entire thing and use the Window>Soften Edges panel to re-smooth or soften.

I guess I'm not as advanced as I thought. I'm aware of both your answers but just forgot them. Duh! Yep, edges is the thing, and of course smoothing. So the next question, would it be possible to apply a style without edges to components, e.g. furniture and maintain and overall style with edges for the rest of the model? Plugin?

You can do that from the Styles dialog...Window > Styles. To make it easy to switch, you can save 2 scenes - one with each style.

You can selectively hide edges on an object. Open the component (or make a unique copy to save the original) to raw geometry. Change the face style under View menu to wireframe. Select all and hide (hides all edges) return to your regular face style and faces will show, without edges.

If you are finding that to be a lot of work in a big model it might involve recombining images from two scenes done the way Bldzrd12 mentioned.

Plus smoothing the furniture rather than hiding the edges would work too.

A simple example of the difference between soft and hidden.
