Hey folks, i remember a while back someone was looking for tutorials on how to make Low Poly models, at the time i wasnt the best when it came to low poly modelling so i set off and learnt myself for game dev reasons, during that time i spent learning the best methods i eventually discoverd low poly models can look great with the right texture applied to give the illusion of a highly detailed model, so i said i would show you all what i have learnt by showing you a little tutorial on how i did it.

Step 1: First i searched the web for a 10x10 Grid and imported into SU, i then devided the texture into 10x10 squares as you can see by the verts in the image below.
      GRID.png

Step 2: I removed a section from the grid as you can see on the left that i wanted to use to construct my low poly model, as you can see that section is already UV mapped from the first step.
      CUTOUT.png

I then folded the cutout section to form a box, note that the UVs are still wrapped to the box. i kept the original cut out to view it from above for the next step.
      MODEL_LAYOUT.png

Step 3: I then opened up the texture in Gimp and painted over the squares i used in the cut out portion i used to form the UV mapped box.
      PAINT_1.png

And now look at the box after the paint over.
      PAINT_2.png

Step 4: So we have a bus but it needs some work so we can place wheels underneath, so i carefully added more verts so i could create wheel arches.
      SPLIT_UP.png
      SPLIT_UP_PAINT.png

Step 5: Ok for my next step i need to create just 1 wheel but i wanted to use as little of the texture as possible, so i used the top left square and made a triangle and a square from its little section i painted, as seen below.
      WHEEL_CONSTRUCT.png

Step 6: i then attached both the triangle and the square like so and duplicated it around all the way around, then i copied the outer wheel to the opposite side to form the wheel into a solid.
      wheel_2.png
      wheel_3.png

And there you have it a low poly bus
      BUS_COMPLETE.png

So just goes to show you sometimes low poly with a highly detailed texture can be as effective as a high poly model, but it doesn't stop there, i only used a small portion of the texture, so let me show you how many models you can create just by using 1 texture.
      TRANSPORT_ASSETS_TILE.png
      TRANSPORT_ASSETS.jpg
All these models created with just 1 texture, i hope you enjoyed my short tutorial and i hope most of all some of you learnt from this, i would also like to see others post low poly models here for us all to see and learn from, thanks for taking time to read my tutorial πŸ˜„

Nice one. Great example and reminder of the power of UV mapping, probably something that doesn't get done enough in Sketchup. Although I'm not sure at what point it would become more efficient on memory to use it in an "average" size static model?

They are so cool, I'd like to use them in a photo-real render for shits and giggles.

Seriously man thats amazing!! I love them!

I've been doing something similar with low poly interiors for external architectural renders for years. All the materials are on one large map so that I only have one material covering maybe 20 items, stops my material palette becoming too heavy!
