How to put 2D faces onto 3D terrain and keep faces
-
Hello Forum!
I have this problem I would like to fix, and was hoping I could get some useful tips or ideas from you guys.
I have only one day of experience with SketchUp, so you could say that I am a bit fresh.
What I want to know is whether it is possible to combine a 3D terrain model with 2D faces and also keep the faces?
In this particular case;
I have managed to get my 3D terrain from a picture in Google Earth, using the explode function and then created a sandbox From Countours. (Also, if there is a better or more accurate way to get a 3D model from a Google Earth terrain layer, I would appreciate it).
The terrain in question is a golf course. Now I want to make the fairways appear as faces. In a different layer, I have drawn up the fairways using the Freehand Drawing tool, and positioned them in the "air" above the 3D model. They are click-able and useable faces, but they are in 2D. What I want is to "combine"/"flatten"/"drop"/"stamp" these faces onto the 3D terrain so that they follow the contours and also keep their click-able faces. The reason for this is that I need the faces to be able to run a plugin.
I have already tried two things:
-
I have draped the shapes onto the 3D face. This will mark the areas I need on the 3D terrain, but I cannot mark them separately, nor are they click-able faces. Is there anyway to convert draped areas to faces?
(Separate question for draping tool: Most times when I drape, the shape will be draped with double lines, but sometimes with single. Is there a trick to get it to be single lines?) -
I have pushed/pulled the 2D faces through the 3D terrain and then deleted all faces and lines above and below the "ground". The areas become click-able lines on the surface, but there are no faces. I have tried a plugin called Weld and also the Make Faces plugin, but no luck.
I will attach the files in question, showing the floating faces, the push/pull version and the draped version.
Hopefully anyone here can be able to give me some pointers. I really appreciate any help I can get! I am using SketchUp 2014 btw.
Thanks and best regards

Hello Pilou,
Thank you very much for your reply.
The videos gave me some good tips, but did not really include what I was looking for. For instance, I see that they make the golf hole, and in the end I thought they were going to glue the hole to the google earth surface so that it would stick to it and follow the contours while still keeping its face (and not becoming a non-planar surface). Is there anyway to do this? However, in the meantime, I managed to find a way to solve my problem, at least 70%. It is not the perfect solution, but it is good enough.
Nevertheless, I thank you very much for your reply, I learned some new, good stuff.
