Problem when importing mesh file into sketchup 8
-
**Hi, I have a point cloud of a model in pcd format, and I use pcl tool to convert the pcd file to the ply file (in ascii format) (pcl_pcd2ply). Then I use this plugin: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24883 to import the ply file to sketchup, but sketchup (both sketchup 8 and sketchup 2014) always crashes during the import. On the other hand, the meshlab (http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/) can import such ply file with no problem, thus I want to get some help from you about this issue.
Since the meshlab can also export the dae file, I try to import the dae file to sketchup, but it still does not work (no crash, but no model imported), so I will really appreciate for any help about these issues.
Here you can find the original pcd file, the ply file and the dae file for your reference: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B49go8f2Nr2gR21tc2d0WE91eGc%26amp;usp=sharing
Thanks for viewing!**

Sketchup natively doesn't do so well with point clouds, Ming. Have you looked into any point cloud plugins for Sketchup? I know Bentley (the guys who make Microstation) have a point cloud plugin for Sketchup called Pointools that could be worth checking out.

Hi Ming,
I looked at the .ply file you posted. It contains only points with no face data. i am not sure what is crashing SketchUp, but my .ply importer does not import points - it uses the points to create faces. There is no face data in the .ply file.
Do you want to view the point cloud in SketchUp, or did you want to view a mesh made from the point data in SketchUp?
My extension can not create a mesh from points. Use MeshLab to create a mesh from the point data. Then you can export the mesh and try to import in SketchUp again. It is probably a good idea to clean and simplify the mesh in MeshLab before exporting.
