What's the difference between soft and smooth edges?

Why are the soft and smooth attributes for edges separate? The Eraser tool only toggles them together. How are they different from each other and the combined attribute?

Thanks. It is unfortunate that SketchUp's own documentation doesn't discuss that.

Well, a car might be smooth, yet technically hard... but a pillow may be soft and not hard yet still smooth... Too literal?
