Cut straw complex roof
-
Hey there,
I'm trying to model a cut straw (thatched) roof which has a complex shape. I've massed out the rough shape but a proper roof has round edges and some thichness to it. Anyone an idea how to tackle this problem? In the end it needs to become a solid roof without messed up geometry since i need to punch some window's in it as well, also since i'm rendering it in 3dsmax/vray.
Thanks in advance.
best regards,
Eddy

Have a look at this, a terrain and cloth draping discussion http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=21379&hilit=drape+cpoints
As thatched roofs are normally quite organic and a little lumpy, the above process plus maybe the addition of running the jitter plugin over it should help introduce some randomness.

My first thought was a combination of Joint Push Pull (thickening option) and Round Corner, did you try this?
