Sketchup 8
-
Hi everybody :
Hopefully, I'm in the correct Forum. I just switched over to Windows 7 Pro- 32-bit. And, I installed Sketchup V. 8. If I have my information correct, Version 8 WILL accept the Version 7.1 format files, with the option of converting them over to Version 8 format. Correct ? Then I can "re-save" my .skp files in the Version 8 format ? I just want to make sure I'm going "in the right direction" with this. Thanks, garystan

Hi, garystan:
The short answer to your question is yes. If you have any remote desire to retain a v7 version of a file, you may want to do that, too.I will leave it to the moderators to decide about this thread's location.

As Tim says, yes.
Simple way to look at it. Newer version will open older version but old version won't open new version. And to top it off, New version can "save as" back to old version but old version can't "save as" forward to new version.
Currently that works from version 3 through to version 2013.

Hi everybody :
I just noticed that my older .skp files (version 7) wasn't being converted to version 8 .skp files. I'd open one of my older .skp files. Then I'd get the dialog box stating that I can save this file to the newer version. But, I can't save the "newer" version using the older (version of Sketchup). I'd save a file in version 8, then I get the "Replace existing file ? ", clicking OK of course. Then, when I went back to one of the other files that I saved with version 8, I'd still get the dialog box referring to saving in the newer version, etc....... I don't understand what's wrong. garystan

Re :
I forgot to mention that....when saving in the newer version (version 8), in the TYPE box, it's listed as .skp, Sketchup version 7....Sketchup version 6....etc....all the way down to version 3. Of course, I just selected .skp with the FILENAME. Unless I click on the "Don't show this warning...etc" button to simply shut off that warning dialog box ? garystan

You don't need to convert them. It warns you because once you default save it in 8 it will no longer work in 7. If for some reason you think you may want to use them in 7 then you can save them as 7, but if you are simply moving to 8 then it is ok to tick the little box so it doesn't warn you any more.
Then work with your files in 8 and just save them without thinking. If you then want to use a file in 7, or give it to someone who still uses an old version, you can "Save as" to 7 or 6 etc.
No real need to over think it. Work in 8 and you'll be fine.
Edit. If you were moving to an unstable platform and were testing etc and had the risk of having to revert to 7 then it would be worth keeping things as 7. But 8 is stable. Also never a good idea to do major upgrades and such in the middle of a big job, in that sort of situation it's best to save with a backup in the earlier version until you know things are safe. But 8 has been around long enough.
