Why do you hate the free version? Think of it as a great way to get anyone into learning and using SU. Then once people realize they love and they need it to do a little more than the free version does, they can upgrade and pay the money.

Why would you think I hate the free version? I think it is great! There are so many talented modelers out there creating fantastic things everyday that would not have discovered their abilities if it were not for the free version of SU. Not many people, especially nowdays, can fork over the cost of a Pro version (which I think is overpriced).

Personally I don't think the vast majority even need the pro version. While I do have Pro, I only installed it to make sure the copy I bought on Ebay would work before I offered copies to others here on the forum (we won't go into the details of that fiasco). I have not once used any of the Pro features, and probably won't.

Seriously, what did I say that made you think I hated SU free?

So Steve, which version do you use? Free or Pro?

As I just said, I do have Pro, but if I had to go back to the free version it would not bother me one bit (other than the hassle of setting up everything again). While I'm sure it has some nice features that are useful for some people, I just don't need it.

Your comments about wanting free to cost some money, for one. The other being it looked like you were hoping that trimble would leave it in the dust. I can read it differently and see that you weren't hoping they would, but were perhaps afraid that they would. That's it.

If you add to your obvious skillset other applications then the Pro version will make life much more streamlined.

The Import/Export options offer better workflow.

Since your field is Classic cars then SU Pro isn't designed for this and hence your opinion on finding the Pro features useless for you.

If you were involved in AEC then I'm sure the limitations of the Free would be frustrating.

I don't want it to cost, it's just that if it were part of Trimble's bottom line I feel they would make more of an effort to get it right.

Believe me, I think SU free is fantastic, and has done so much for so many people. I know Google's reason for making it free wasn't so people would include them in their prayers each nite, it was purely so they (Google) could benefit from it by getting hundreds of thousands of buildings created for them for free.

But regardless of why they gave it away, the end result is the same - thousands of people enjoying themselves and discovering hidden talents, and, maybe most important, getting to meet and interact with all the great people here on the forums.

I don't know why I manage to annoy everybody. It's not my intention, but for quite a while now I just haven't been able to express my thoughts as clearly as I used to. Guess it's time to retire to the rocking chair.

You're not annoying me. Your original topic is 100% valid. SU shouldn't do this funky stuff.

But when you have a natural talent for 3D you should broaden your scope. I rarely use SU now. Mostly to help folks here and for playing.

90% I'm stuck in MoI, Silo3D or Blender. Currently learning Modo 601....slowly

I appreciate it. I have looked into other modeling programs, watched a lot of videos, but at this point in my life I'm doing good to get anything done in SU, let alone trying to learn another program. They are simply way beyond my capabilities. Way beyond.

Having said that, from what you've said Trimble is on the road to concentrating on the Pro version (or versions), and in the end I see the free users getting left in the dust. Like you said, the difference between the pro and free versions will increase.

I don't see what you base these statements on... ❓

I get the unsoftening when I maximizeor "restore down" the SU window. But not every time, I think. And the Edit menu then contains an "Undo Soften..." option.
