Both. I reference future, current and past technology and then my imagination to try and create an original configuration.
The overall shape and configuration was straight from my imagination and came first, in this situation.

There is a sneaky way to fake stars, I did an experimental scene in Podium when I first started rendering...you can use a perforated globe with lights behind to create a galaxy. It's probably a daft way of doing things but it works!

Thanks for the suggestion and quick tut.
What I really need is a good way to make believable near orbit planets.
What I usually use for backgrounds are just photo images on an SU cyclorama or flat plane with photo.
