    Hi,

I've noticed that when I open a new SketchUp file and copy/paste a model from another file into that file, the file size is often significantly smaller than that of the file which originally contained the model, even though both files have the same apparent (visible) content.

I assume that this difference is due to some garbage that collected while I was working on the file. Is that correct?

Is copying/pasting a model into a new file the easiest way to reduce the file size? And the most effective?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Models collect components and materials and layers. Even if you delete all the component instances in the model, the model still retains the definition in it. Same with materials. So you need to purge your model.

Go to the Model info window. A round blue circle icon with a white exclamation point in it, or on windows its in the Window menu > Model Info. Open that and you'll get the model info dialogue window. Go to the statistics tab, and click on "Purge Unused". That should do a good job going through and deleting all info in the model that is not actually being used. Good luck,

      Chris

Or you can use Thomthoms powerful plugin cleanup , if you need more options...

As Chris said purge before each saving it can decrease by ten (not always) the file size.
